Show DOWN IX ARIZONA How Pioneer Day AVns Celebrated at St Johns S1 Johns Apache county Ariz July 30 1S94 To the Editor of The Herald We should be pleased to have our friends know that we have not forgotten forgoten I the anniversary of the entrance of the pioneers into the Salt Lake valley The I 24th i of July was celebrated In the good I old style Father H J Platt Hyrum Chapman A V Gibbons and W G Black were the committee of arrange commitee ments and Were very energetic in their labors U SUnrise three S3 were fired in honor of the first Presidency of fred church the stars and stripes were hoist cd and the band played Hail Columbia At 930 the marshal of the day Joseph B nlche formed the procession at the as sembl r ° ° mV The color bearer took lead then the St Johns brass band then came the carriage in which President Brigham Young rode across the plains then the high priests seventies and elders sisters of the Relief society members of the mutual improvement associations and Sunday school children After marching along some of the Principal streets the procession returned to the assembly room which had been decorated very tastefully where the programme for the morning exercises was carried out The principal speakers were A V Gibbons who spoke upon the journey of the saints I in crossing the plains on their way to Utah and E N Freeman who gave a sketch of the Mormon batalllon Both were very Interesting The songs reci I tations and music which were interspers ed were enlivening At 2 p m a dance I was given for the children which was a very enjoyable time for them The com mittee had arranged for a grand social party at 8 p m for the adiUts which I consisted of songs and recitations interspersed inter-spersed with dancing and a speech by Elder Hyrum Chapman relating the manner I man-ner In which the first anniversary of the 24th of July was celebrated in Salt Lake city which was very Interesting Many of our old settlers expressed themselves that it was the most enjoy able time they had spent for several years |
