Show POLICE AND mfiS BOARD GEORGE F FELT IS FINALLY SELECTED SE-LECTED AS CLERK The Drsifted Caiiairtiitei Reming tons SeiiNntionuI Resolution Considered Con-sidered The Policemen Returned From Ogden Yesterday Afternoon After a weeks delay the police and fire commissioners yesterday morning agreed upon a clerk in the person of George F Felt although the vote by whictti the gentleman was elected was not unanimous Since the first regular regu-lar meeting the board has tied upon a number of applicants the favorites of whom seemed to be James B Bloor Morris Sommer M E McEnany and one or two others At the meeting held yesterday after several votes had been taken Mr Felt received the requisite number to elect Mr Noble voting for McEnany Having broken the deadlock the commissioners com-missioners then considered the somewhat some-what sensational resolution introduced by Mr Remington in the council on Tuesday night and referred to the board As will be remembered this resolution res-olution recited that the mayor and chief of police had exceeded their authority au-thority in ordering and taking the pride of the police department to Og den and demanded an investigation with the recommendation that the department de-partment be reduced just the number of patrolmen that has been in Ogden since Sunday morning Of course there are some portions of the resolution which are farcical but there are others oth-ers which are considered seriously and they are directly in line with the position posi-tion taken by the members of the commission com-mission that they as a board are the head and have exclusive control of the police and lire departments Every phase of the situation was thoroughly considered and all of the members were of the opinion that the board should shirk no responsibility in the matter but on account of the somewhat some-what peculiar manner in which the city attorney rendered his opinion on the question they were still in the dark as to the extent of their authority author-ity A resolution was adopted calling upon the city attorney for a written opinion He has already stated verbally ver-bally in substance that the commission commis-sion did not have the power to recall the absentees although not clearly defining de-fining what its duties were in the premises It is expected that the opinion opin-ion will be forthcoming this afternoon when another meeting will be held With the opinion before them the members mem-bers of the board will have a guide line to which to trim Upon the call of Mayor Baskin Salt Lakes crack posse of police returned from the front yesterday afternoon and today the boys will be walking their old beats The recall was made for the reason that his ihonor anticipated anticipat-ed some labor troubles during the day but fortunately his fears were not realized re-alized Chief Pratt Captain Donovan and the police returned upon the Union Pacific train which reached here at 435 p m and took the street cars as far as Main and South Temple where the men fell in and marched full face to First South then changing to fours proceeded to the hall where instructions instruc-tions from the chief were issued by the captain and ranks were broken The boys were greatly admired for their soldierly bearing and the accuracy accu-racy and dispatch with which they performed the various evolutions They are a handsome lot and made an imposing im-posing appearance Naturally enough they were very tired after their hard vigil and in order to give them a chance to rest up the regular shift changes were not made until 11 p m1 |
