Show BOARD OF PUBLC WORKS V Business Transacted at the Meeting Last Night M MARSHALL QUALIFIES CONTRACTORS NOTIFIED TO PROCEED PRO-CEED WITH SIDEWALK WORK I Chairman Doremus Reports on a Numlier of Mutters Clout ot Applicants Ap-plicants for the Position of Inspector In-spector John Burt Gets i But May Decline V V 4 The local board of public works met in semimonthly session last night Chairman Doremus presiding and all members present Hon Thomas Marshall the new acquisition ac-quisition upon the board had filed his bond with Messrs John B Dooly and Jonathan C Royle as sureties He appeared at an early hour was extended ex-tended a cordial reception and entered actively upon the discharge of his duties V The distinguished gentleman has probably not yet acquired the knowledge of sidewalks street paving blockings street crossings and other I minutiae that characterizes some of nis colleagues but promises to become a most useful member Chairman Doremus in his report of work done during recess stated that the contractors upon the gravity sewer had been notified to resume work on April 12 but as they were entitled to ten days notice further proceedings were necssarily in abeyance until the expiration of that time A order was made notifying Con tractor Harrigan to proceed no fur ther with the prosecution of work on First South between Commercial and Main streets until the issue between the propertyowners and city council was disposed of A similar order was made with reference to the strip of I walk between the Bank of Commerce and Remingtons I I The chair was authorized to serve notice that wherever paving was displaced dis-placed for the purpose of repairing water pipes making connections etc that it be replaced at the original contract con-tract price with 25 per cent added The same applies to the displacements of sidewalks V The chair reported that under the terms of the contract with Harrigan the contractor was to remove all surplus sur-plus material to a point the board might direct and at present the north bank of the canal on Ninth South between be-tween Second and Fourth West was being strengthened with i The same officer reported that he had directed the repair of gutter crossings cross-ings at the theatre corner and over the canal in the northwestern portion of the city I S I Upon the motion of Mr Marshall the chair was authorized to exercise a supervisory direction over the V details of work during the week he i same to be reported at each regular meeting to the board V The bonds of Sidney K and Alice Hooper and John Lollin for ridewalk tax were approved i Certain crossings of the Mountain Stone company were approved and a recommendation made that the Culmer Jennings company be allowed their final estimates estmates With reference to the claim of Watson I I Bros Burt in the sum of 134545 the board recommended that it be not i I granted and so endorsed it was sent I back to the council V The chairman was directed to investi I gate the claim of the Mountain Stone company in the sum of 16350 for crossings II cross-ings etc at the southeast corner of the joint city and county building and report re-port the same to the city council The board then proceeded to the appointment ap-pointment of an inspector and an avalanche ava-lanche of applications coming from the file the candidates after a single ballot were reduced to three consisting ofT of-T S Mathis John Burt and L C Kelsey I I Kel-sey Mr Burt receiving three of the five votes was declared elected and should he decline as was feared the chair was authorized to tender the inspectorship to Mr Mathis I was the sense of the board that in his as in all other appointments it reserved the right to dispense with the services of the inspector whenever the interests of the city required I The board then adjourned |
