Show I CONCERTRECEPTION Given By the Epivortn licn ne at the Methodist Church The Epworth League tendered a con certreception to the Young Peoples church societies of this city at the First l E church last evening The audience room was crowded and the programme tive though short was attrac tiveThe The opening number was a skillfully executed piano solo by Miss Susie Harper whkh was followed by an appropriate ap-propriate recitation by Miss Sybil Sybi Stewart Mons V B de Loery sang the tenor solo Dear Heart Madam De Loery sang A Summer Night and Miss Lucas Angus McDonald all with fine effect wih Miss Eva Winberg and Miss Mabel Cooper sang the duet Hear Me Norma Nor-ma also assisting in a quartette from Robin Hood in which they were joined by Mr Carlisle and Mr Scheid these numbers being well received Prof Anton Pededsen was the accompanist ac-companist of the evening 1 Miss Jenne M Long recently of San Francisco made her first public appearance ap-pearance here and won instant recog nition as a reader of extraordinary j f power Indeed without making comparisons com-parisons it may be said that with perhaps one exception she is the most < talented reader who ha been heard j J here Miss Long has a charming personality per-sonality and natural ability of a high order These talents have evidently been developed by careful training un til the lady is fully entitled to that much misused term an artiste ji By request last night she recited Hagar and brought out all of the beauties and strong points in that J poem which In less capable hands would have been commonplace While 4 she displayed all of the abandon necessary neces-sary to make it effective there was still that suggestion of reserve power which characterizes the work of the best readers As stated Miss Longs ability was quickly recognized and she received almost an ovation It is to be hoped that the lady may soon be heard again |
