Show MILLIONS FOR EON u Forty of Them Invested in Gbiotgo Side Shows THREE IMHESSB SPECTACLES If3 3 jaen1l Will Paralyze th Theatrical World Dalys Shakespearean Boival r r Ta PASsion Hay J For THE SUNDAY HERALD Copyrlghted1 ONSERYATIVE estimates place thor tho-r investment in amusement enterprises Q 1 enter-prises for Chicago during tho Worlds fair at 40000000 Enthusiasts in the Garden City fix the sum at 30000000 S But this seems to be a rather wila exaggeration exag-geration Still the capitalization of k amusement projects at Springfield alone I bM already mounted into millions and I much of this money will como from New I York S Abbey Schoeffel and Graus spectacle at the Auditorium Steele Mackayes enterprise enter-prise on the Worlds fair grounds the El dorado of VVeehawken the Sousa monster orchestra prize the Hippodromes the Passion Play and Pains fireworks will all be bscKed by eastern money and lots of It In fact said Mr Scboeffel to me hIt wllL be a great Coney Island with amusements amuse-ments big and little on both sides with the greatest entertainments this country has ever seen and with probably more attrao = < tion outside than inside the fair Theatrical managers east and west have simply gone Chicago mad They are pay lug tremendous prices for privileges big sums for centrally located property and they seem to give no heed whatever to tho fact that July August and September the great months of the fair are conducive to anything but indoor amusements The S latest of the enterprises Is a contract to transplant the Eldorado to Chicago I am told that the capitalization is something like two millions and a half that the grounds have already been selected and that the buildings will be an exact reproduction r repro-duction of those at Weehawken castle f casino fountain lights amphitheatre and IlILWe We will have two enterprises in Chicago from May to October and the tirst will be the spectacle America at the Auditorium Auditor-ium said Mr SchoofTel to me The play there will be arranged by lmre Kiralfy ana be has carte blanche as to the expense The Schaefer family of Vienna today the most marvelous performers in tho world are under contract to appear in the spectacle specta-cle So is Sandow the strong man and we are closing contracts every week with star performers in the capitals of Europe The Passion Play seems to bo an as ured fact I am told that the incorpora tOn of the company at Springfield late in Juno was followed almost immediately by the signing of contracts with all the great Oberammergau players The syndicate is represented in Europe by Franz Janner f director of the Imperial opera house at S Vienna and his first contract was with t Toseph Myer who personated the Saviour I at Oberammergau All the others have I been signed on condition that the SOOOO i guaranteed them be placed in the bank to the order of a third responsible party t This too has been done and it is now the I intention to have all the original costumes and scenery brought here and an amphi theatre will be constructed especially for i the production Even the hotel accommodations accommo-dations for the 235 Bavarian peasants who are to produce the play are engaged I had a chat with one of the New York gentlemen interested in the Chicago Hippodrome Hip-podrome company tile other day and he informed me that matters in connection with the enterprise were progressing splendidly We are investing 2500000 and will have a greater hippodrome than the best and most famous of Europe In fact tho star Paris performers are under contract with us and will be hero at the formal opening next MayS May-S There is still some talk of transferring the Paris Hippodrome complete to tho Libby Prison grounds in Chicago and it is possible that that enterprise will yet be carried into effect S The First Regiment armory is now giv ing way to Veil and Lederers immense J new theatre and I understand that Dr Ziegfeld has secured the Melnlnger orchestra orches-tra as one of its prime attractions So much has been said of Steele Mack f ayes great enterprise on the Worlds fairground fair-ground that 1 can add but little of interest S Jvlr Macksye has not yet finished the play which is to bo produced there and simply announces that it will boon a grander scale f than has ever been attempted In the World of amusements on either side of the At lantic n i r S T h S E S if t r L rI L F I I k5 jYi H IIi II-i t S crniL TILER I When John Philip Sousa of the Marino baa left Washington to accept tho leader I chip of the new phicago orcnestra musical critics announced s that popular music would not lacking and in this they are probably proba-bly correct He will be a formidable rival L to Theodore Thomas whose orchestra is a1o to be greatly enlarged Then there l are vague reports that Gllmore will Rive up ItS I-tS R season Manhattan Beach and transfer t his crcneetry to Chicago for the summer j 5 I beard 10 that the only Gilmore intended 11 to take 100 New York musicians with him The Diffby Bell Opera company will S furnish iu snare of light opera at Hooleys ana twonew operettas are to be produced in addition to Jupiter in allof which Mr and Mrs Bell will appear Wilson and De Wolf Hopperare still sparring for openings open-ings and I beard recently that they had each secured a Chicago theatre for at least part of the season S The fireworks spectacles will be in full twiner Both Pain and Brock havo secured 13 grounds paying enormous prices I understand under-stand far the privileges and will continue 5 the rivalry which has been so notable at Brighton Manhattan this season Both re preparing a Columbian spectacle and Mr Pain is arranging to tell the story of discovery of America in pyrotechnics to be followed by a historical representation i representa-tion of the great American wars all plc i tared in great masses of variegated fire U Austin Dalys Shakespearean revival in itcagow1U be no mean feature of the fcremt fair With Ada Eehan snd uis majr i < attcwtt company he will produce almost all l Q of the greater comedies with superb scenic adjuncts And then the circus 1 Bailey will be there with his 8000000 show and says ho will simply eclipse the Worlds fair itself His spectacular play Is to be under the direction of Bolossy Kiralfy and will bean be-an opposition ImreB at tho Auditorium Bailey says he will have a spectacle in which 2000 people will participate So with Prancioh and his Eldorado produced on a more magnificent scab even than at Weehawken Imre Kiralfys America at the Auditorium and Bolossy Kiralfys Columbus in the circus Chicago will have its fill of spectacular But these are only drops in the ocean of pleasure that will deluge visitors to the fair Incidentally I might add that Edgar Strakosch will be there with his boy wonder won-der tee young sonrano who is to set New York wild this fall His name is Cyril Tyler and ho is 11 years old Edgar will have him out for the first time at Palmers toward the close of the month And as I have heard him sing I can add a word of tribute to his remarkable powers His coloratur aria from Davids La Perle do Bresil was sung with all tne feeling of a Capoul and Schumanns Du Bist Wio Eino Blume was absolutely Pattiesque Now Edgar is praying that the boys voice I wont change at least until after the Worlds fair |
