Show Not Beautiful but Efficient There is a difference between the gripmen of Chicago and New York The New York variety generally wears his hat at a rakish angle is well shaven and often has a curled mustache He watches the street corners with something I some-thing of the look of a masher as his car goes whirling along Broadway In I Chicago the gripman is usually a burly I unshaven person who stands in the I middle of the motor car with a lone iron lever in either hand He does not wear a uniform has a fondness for a slouch hat and an antipathy for gloves As a rule he chews tobacco and uses language as he mumbles to himself of a particularly violent and criminal character But he controls his train of three cars with an eye to business which invariably establishes confident in the passengers He is a western product and his main object seems to be to get his train through on time without killing people It is a question whether the western gripman would not be a beneficial importation to New YorkNew York Sun |
