Show THE CAUSE UNKNOWN Result of the Terrible Mine Explosion Ex-plosion Yesterday STILL SEARCHING FOR THE DEAD Fourteen Bodies Are AU That Is Recovered Many of the Families Destitute The Company Com-pany Not to Blamn Appeals for Aid ROSLTN Wash May HThis morning dawned upontho weary and griefstricken watchero who kept an allnight watch at the scene of yesterdays explosion The rescuers were compelled to cease their labors shortly after midnight owing to the excessive accumulation of firedamp Early this morning the work of rescue was resumed re-sumed The exact cause of the terrible explosion in the coal mine yesterday in which forty three men perished will never be known as it is now certain every man in the mine was killed The most reasonable conclusion is that a miner struck a gas pocket which ignited from his lamp This afternoon only fourteen bodies have been recovered the work being slow because be-cause of the wrecked condition of the interior in-terior of the mine and it is possible that fortyeight hours more will elapse before the lowest lever can be reached A corps of undertakers with two carloads car-loads of coffins arrived froai Tacoma today A coroners jury was empaneled but no inquest will be held until the remaining bodies are recovered The bodies so far recovered are Jonn BONE DAVID REESE JR WILLIAM G HOGDE GEORGE MOSES ROBERT SPOTTS HARRY CAMPBELL THOMAS REESE sn THOMAS HOLMES Piiuss LOVING V JOSEPH LEwis G POLLARD THOMAS BREMEN BEN OSSLIFF JOHN MATES Tho total dead will reach at least forty three A number of tho families of the dead men are destitute and the manager of the coal company says he will see to their needs for the present General Manager Kangley of the company said today that there are possibly fortythree men killed no more The mine was in the best possible condition condi-tion that it could be for ventilation and the safety of life and no one aitaches any blame to the officials of tbe company All the requirements of tho law as to ventilation ventila-tion etc had been fully complied with Mayor Miller this morning sent telegrams tele-grams to surrounding cities and towns asking for relief for the destitute families |
