Show THE COMMONWEAL ARMY What General Carter Says of the Situation IT IS MORE ENCOURAGING NEW RECRUITS ARE BEING RECEIVED RE-CEIVED EVERY DAY The Battalion Now Numbers Five Companies Carters Division Will Parade the Streets This Morning Question of Transportation Transporta-tion What Is Being Done l > y the Committees The recruitingof < Carters division of the army of commmonwealers goes steadily on and before another Sabbath day has dawned the column will have departed 600 strong The recruits are determined and to the end that the intermountain division may add its full strength to that vast column of petitioners that is slowly moving towards the steps of the national capitol are being put through a drill several times a day GENERAL CARTERS REPORT General Carter who has the field under perfect patrol and to whom new platoons of raw recruits are reporting each day reported last evening that the results of his canvass in behalf of equipments had been most gratifying He turned his attention to the southern settlements in the county yesterday and returned to camp smiling and buoyant Everywhere had he been met with manifestations of encouragement and the result of the days foraging was to be seen in the addition of bed clothing and wearing apparel of every variety During his absence a subcommittee sub-committee had begun to scour the city and this morning will begin to gather up the results with horse and wagon They too were assured blankets and comforters garments of all kinds and shoes of which latter of the later many recruits re-cruits are in bad need Into the larder also has poured a steady but yet limited stream of meats and vegetables The only things in the line of rations upon which they are conspicuously short are coffee and sugar Scrupulously abstemious in their relations with the other and more exhilarating fluids the recruits must have their coffee in liberal quantities and some good Samaritan might look to it that the lack of coffee and sugar is suppledTHE THE ARMY The battalion now numbers five companies com-panies beginning with company A and the sixth company F was yesterday yes-terday being rapidly recruited At 10 oclock this morning that the citizens of Salt Lake may see of what material the Carter Division consists the column col-umn will form and with music at its I head and General Carter in command parade the streets WORK OF THE COMMITTEES While instructions are going on down at camp the citizens committee of fifteen fif-teen are industriously prosecuting their work and last evening reported more cheerful results At 530 they went into in-to executive session excluding the reporters re-porters and taking up the question of transportation which has been a stubborn stub-born one to master The railroads themselves them-selves are not falling over each other I in the effort to pull the army nor have I they taken a stand on flat refusal There are they contend some delicate noints to be covered in the matter of transportation and it is upon these that they are debating I No matter the result of these deliberations delib-erations however the intermountain division wU leave That fact is becoming be-coming hourly more apparent in the I restlessness of those who constitute it I and as with the Kelly division during its temporary halt at Ogden a train may be induced to capture them Catechised concerning the number with which he expected to start General Gen-eral Carter casting his eye over the forms that moved to and fro In camp and making a hasty review fixocl it at 600 The closing down of the Bamber I ger employment bureau and the fact I that the demand for labor at home is fully supplied has induced many who had hitherto determined to remain and wear out the I REIGN OF HARD TIMES to enlist and the roster in the past fortyeight hours ha rapidly increased I is very likely that definite information infor-mation upon the hour of leaving will be furnished today and that there maybe may-be no delays when the question of transportation has been solved the collection prosecuted col-lection of provender will be actively i I |
