Show MUST BC PUT DOWN It is strange to some people that the Republicans never raised a V rumpus over the benefits that are to flow to the Sugar trust from the new tariff until the recalcitrant Democrats In the Senate Sen-ate stood in the way of the full reform which was attempted by the great body of the representatives of the party The reason is that the Republican party par-ty caused the creation of the Sugar trust and fed and fattened it till it gained the power which we have seen it exercise in national legislation V It is more remarkable that the country coun-try was not aroused to the fact that the Republican policy in relation to the sugar question poured fifteen millions I mil-lions of dollars a year into the treasury treas-ury of the trust That will now be greatly reduced The Boston Herald says the people of the United States are more patient under robbery than they are under the usurpation of powers pow-ers which they delegate to their representatives repre-sentatives they will see their money filched from them with much less indignation indig-nation than that visited on those who would deprive them of any of theh I rights as freemen That no doubt is true But V there Is one good thing which will probably result re-sult from the exposure which has taken tak-en place of the imprudent and arrogant arro-gant attempts of the Sugar trust and other obese corporations fattened by V Republican protection to dictate tariff legislation The country will be aroused against this interference and will not only V resent the servility of the Sugar I Senators to the Sugar trust but will call for legislation to clip the wings of these voracious devourers that seek to perpetuate their power and wealth at the expense of the body politic The minds of our statesmen should be directed the formulation of measures meas-ures for the purpose of preventing such abnormal growths and it must be clear to every reflecting mind that only in and through the Democratic party can the power of those arrogant products pro-ducts of R publ can protection be effectually ef-fectually suppressed V I |
