important distributing dis-tributing centers report general trade quite irregular previ us gains having I been followed by shrinkages in many instances Chicago jobbers in cotton dress fabrics fab-rics silks hardware clothing and lumber lum-ber report increased sales but at St Louis unfavorable weather has checked the demand for dry goods and millinery millin-ery Kansas City reports considerable activity ac-tivity in general lines as does Omaha where improved weather and good roads have stimulated business Planting throughout Nebraska is being be-ing pushed but the crops need rain At both cities last mentioned live stock interests have Improved The industrial feature of the week is found in thirtyone strikes throughout the country involving 40000 employees i principally among building trades at New York and Chicago Textile industries in-dustries at Patterson and New York coal miners and coke operators in western west-ern Pennsylvania also struck While bank clearings for March are 16 percent per-cent larger than in February they averaged av-eraged about 13900000f daily contrasted con-trasted with 13 < 5 000000 in February Except for Febr ry last and September Septem-ber and August of 1S93 last months clearings total is the smallest of any month for six years it is 31 per cent less than in March 1893 Three months clearings aggregate 11026000000 33 per cent less than last year Bank clearings this week aggregate about 5950 000000 28 per cent more I than last week but the total is 20 percent per-cent less tLan the like week last year Further advances in wheat are due to the scare based on frozen crop damage The monthly report of worlds supply of wheat indicates the United States will carry over more available wheat to July 30 than on any like date except in 1893 On April 1 the worlds wheat stock was smaller than one year ago the like of which has never been reported re-ported since February 1891 Exports of wheat flour included both coasts United States amount to 2778000 bushels bush-els this week against 2966000 bushels last week 3636000 bushels in the week a year ago and atrifie less than 3000000 bushels each in corresponding weeks two and three years ago Thre were 199 business failures reported re-ported to Bradstreets this week against 246 last week and 186 in the week a year ago 160 two years ago and 178 three years ago AS SEEN KY DUX Seigniorage Veto Has Greatly Helped Undines New York April GR G Duns weekly review of trade says Improvement in business has continued contin-ued sin e the presidents veto which has been sustained in the House But the best news of the week is a great decrease of failures of which full returns are given for the first time by months in the quarterly statement The number was 2000 In January 1 202 in February and 1005 in March The commercial liabilities were 31320 S67 in January 17930419 in February and 14760803 in March Nearly half the commercial liabilities were of firms failing during the first month much more than half of the trading liabilities liabili-ties 54 per cent as the full statement chows 42 per cent of the manufacturing manufac-turing liabilities and 49 per cent of the other commercial liabilities Moreover nearly twothirds of the banking liabilities liabil-ities were of failures in the first month and over half of the railroad liabilities liabili-ties Though the number of commercial commer-cial failures 4297 in the United States was never equalled in any quarter until the third quarter of last year the average of liabilities is only 14840 which is lower than appeared in the records for thirtyeight years at anytime any-time closely preceding any serious e I verse The degree of commercial soundness sound-ness and health thereby indicated gives l ground for hope that the liquidations t consequent upon the disaster of 1893 i have been in a large measure accomplished accom-plished 1 Wheat has been lifted about 4 cents i by reports of serious injury to the plant but the accounts are more than usually conflicting and there Is much uncertainty about the extent of the injury Western receipts were 1711147 f bushels for the week against 3170971 last yarv but the exports FIXAXCE I Bradstreet Reviews the Movements Mailr I New York April 6Reviewing the financial situation Bradstreet will o morrow say The feature of the present I pres-ent week was the suspension of the foreign purchasing which furnished the motive power of the previous weeks market Various causes were assigned for the sudden slackening of interest in Americans in London and it was I even suggested that misconceptions in regard to the difficulties in South Carolina Car-olina had been effective in this connection connec-tion The more reasonable view of the matter is that the interest suddenly shown in our securities abroad was largely speculativethat the speculation specula-tion was overdone and quickly exhausted I exhaust-ed itself In support of this it might be mentioned that the foreign investments invest-ments dealt in for bonds has also been of a less active character At the same time London has appeared only as a moderate seller and retains for the time the greater part of its purchases I of both stocks and bonds in this market mar-ket The absence of liquidation from I this source has therefore sustained prices and though the professional element ele-ment made several attempts to bring about a reaction they meet with no success and seem to have only increased in-creased the outstanding short interest The trading was well distributed throughout the entire list The support I sup-port was divided among a number of commission houses it seems to come from one source and leads to the be I lief that the Gould party are on the i bull side Richmond Terminal Missouri I
