| Show EXPLAINING THE DELAY We believethere is a good deal more in what our Washington correspondent says regarding the admission of Idaho than certain cer-tain politicians here and others in our northern neighbor are willing to confess Whatever othcrsmay have thought whatever what-ever were the motives actuating them in seeking statehood Mr Duiiois was work I ing for a Senatorship The gentleman is not a patriot of the selfsacrificing order Whatever he does Is for pay His ambition is lofty and it always has in view the elevation ele-vation and advancement of Mr PKEDDD BOJS His reputation is that of being true as steel to a friendso long as it is to his personal advantage to be true to him Ho also has the reputation of sacrificing any friend when ho can no longer use him for his own purpose As remarked DuBOIS Du-BOIS sought statehood because ho saw a Senatorship in sight or at least thought ho saw one There is one other if no more whoplunged into the cause with the same object in view That is Governor Snocr who has given much time and spent money freely to advance the scheme all the time dreaming of the toga he was to don It is said that the state movement has cost the governor a sum equal to the Senatorial salary for a full term and the old mau sane saving hardfisted and coolheaded as he is in other respectsstands ready to blow in more cash to secure the coveted honor or distinction It has been understood under-stood by Dunois and Snort that they would take the Senatorships and we have heard it staled that a certain renegade Democrat was to be made Representative as his reward re-ward for turning traitor to his party going back on his principles and supporting tho wicked scheme The state offices were toe l > to-e apportioned among the Republicans who have gone down into their pockets for the cash which has been an essential element in the statehood campaign The arrangement arrange-ment was seemingly entirely satisfactory everybody until the state was in sight when it suddenly occurred to some of the active politicians that If there were plums to be had they the active politicians had as good a right as anybody to go into the scramble for a share of the fruit One MCCoNNELL of North Idaho spent some weeks in Washington Wash-ington last winter lobbying for statehood and he cannot be convinced that his section sec-tion of the coming state ought not to be represented in the Senate and by him As MCCO ELI went to Washington on Suorrs money and is the governors personal per-sonal friend he cannot think of racing with his excellency for a Senatorship hence yieldinggracefully one seat to SHOUP he appropriates the other to himself DUBOIS being left to skirmish for anything else he may see lying around Again it is not certain that the renegade Democrat referred re-ferred to above will be willing to trust the people to send him to the lower house of Congress He may insist upon a Senator ship the getting of which involves fewer chanccsas the legislature can be controlled much easier than the people In the vent of the Democrat demanding a Sena torship of course it will be the one upon which DUBOIS has set his heart as everybody every-body concedes the other place to SUOCP Now as a matter of fact Mr FRED DuBOIS Du-BOIS is not popular among people or politicians poli-ticians of Idaho He is recognized as an earnest industrious unscrupulous worker and a clever schemer but he is not liked and having served his term of usefulness the better element up there would not be averse to letting him go in peace with the admonition that ho sin no more The above is the status of the case as it exists Idaho and it seems that some of tho facts at least are known in Washington Washing-ton Mr DUIJOIS has it in his power we sincerely believe to defeat the admission bill by delaying action on it and our opinion of the man is that he would rather keep Idaho out of the union eternally than see it go in with a political enemy triumphing triumph-ing over him Unless ho gets an assurance from the western end of the line that he will not be left unprovided for by the admission ad-mission it need not bo expected that he will be eager to advance the bill and if he shall receive a contrary assurance in our opinion opin-ion the efforts in behalf of statehood will income to naught The situation somewhat some-what humorous in its aspects |
