Show SPANISH DOUBLOONS An Expedition to Search for Pirate Treasure in the Island of Santa Cataline Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK Oct 24 Captain Robert A Annett arrived in this city from Baltimore today He is bore for the purpose of organizing or-ganizing an expedition in search of hidden treasure The treasure which he proposes to search for is supposed to have been hidden hid-den by pirates on the Island of Santa Cata line in tile Caribbean sea The island was formerly the headquarters of Captain Morgan Mor-gan the bucanneer and lies inabout the lat itude of 1 degrees north There are two men Captain Annett says who know all about the treasure One of them is John Curry of Kingston Jamaica who found 810000 in Spanish doubloonsHe landed from a Spanish vessel in search of food and water and accidentally discovered the cave Ho says there were nine earth ern jars each a high as a man and filled to the top with Spanish doubloons He took with him 10000 worth all he could conveniently conve-niently carry He went to Jamaica where ho spent his fortune in five years When his treasure was exhausted he returned re-turned to the island and was arrested by the Indians of old Fort Providence and taken to Aspinwall where he was imprisoned im-prisoned The Spanish authorities tried to make him tell where he got the money but he refused Then Mr Compton the British consul at Aspinwall interfered in his behalf and he was released For this favoL Curry told the consul his discovery Compton sunk all his fortune in fitting up an expedition to search for the treasure and secured the services of a British man ofwar to protect those making the searcn Curry was with the expedition but on reaching the island he refused to toll where the treasure was hidden claiming he would get none of it when discovered Curry was threatened with lynching but he remained re-mained obdurate and finally Consul Comp ton in despair committed suicide The other man who knows all about the missing treasure is Alexander Archibald of Old Providence who while digging a well on Santa Cataline struck an earthen jar containing 15000 in Spanish doubloons It is for the remainder of the treasure that Captain Annett proposes to set out with his expedition Concessions have been obtained from the government of Hon duras The latter will get 15 per cent and the Belize Produce company of Honduras 15 per cent of all the treasure found Annott has already led one search party to the island in quest of the treasure which met with failure It was on the yacht Maria which reached tho island November 24 1887 The Maria spent threo months searching for the phantom treasure on Terneffe in the of Ternefe cape bay Honduras The machinery gave out and the expedition expedi-tion headed for New York Fivedays after leaving Beyhzo the yacht sprung a leak when 150 miles from land Tho crew were rescued by the ship Arbela of Nova Scotia one hour before the yacht sank |
