Show A SINGULAR SUICIDE One More Unfortunate Seeks Relief in Death THE VICTIM A YOUNG GIRL Was Unrequited Love the Cause i1ho Facts Elicited at the Coroners Inquest Held Yesterday At an early hour yesterday morning one more victim was added to the long list of suicides that have occurred in this vicinity of late Tho unfortunate person was Miss Matilda Goodmansen who has been employed em-ployed as a domestic at the home of Mr Briant Young in North Salt Lake Miss Goodmansen came here from Spanish Fork where her parents reside some months ago and had been employed as a domestic up to the time of her death The only reason that can bo assigned for the rash act is that the unfortunate girl became be-came infatuated with some man who did L not return her affection or that she quarreled quar-reled with her lover She left no message to throw any light upon the affair and the real cause can only be guessed at She was in her usual health and spirits Tuesday Tues-day and in the evening called at a neighbors on an errand While there she I met several young people and remained with them until after 10 oclock From L there she went directly home and taking a tin plate containing a mixture of arsenic and flour which had been placed under the I cupboard for the purpose of killing mice swallowed a big dose of the poison Without With-out arousing any one the girl quietly retired re-tired to her room and lying down on her bed awaited the end The horrible convulsions con-vulsions which inevitably follow aresenical I poisoning soon ensued and her groans aroused the family Mr Young entered I the room and found THE GIRL TVJUTHISG IX AGONY her features distorted and her lips flecked With foam Assistance was soon procured but all efforts to save her life proved unavailing un-availing and along towards 10 oclockyes terday morning she passed away Tho remains were brought to this city and taken to Joseph William Taylors undertaking un-dertaking establishment where Coroner Harris hold an inquest yesterday afternoon after-noon J E Hanseu J W Taylor and P L Squires being sworn as jurors Briant Young was the first witness He testified I first became acquainted rith the deceased in April last and she cau to work for me some five weeks ago She was a native of Finland about IS years old and had been in this country some three years Her parents reside 1 believe at Spanish Fork She was of a cheerful disposition and I cannot assign any reason for her act It would seem that she had been contemplating suicide because be-cause several days ago she said to me in a joking way Dont be surprised if you find me dead in my cot some morning She left the house Tuesday night to go tom to-m mothers for some yeast and we had gone to bed when she returned I was AWAKENED BY HER GROANING and on going to her room found her in spasms I at once went form for-m mother and others and we did everything we could to relieve her but she went from one spasm into another and died between 12 and 1 oclock Soon after her death I found that some one had taken a plate containing a mixture of flour and arsenic from under the cupboard and taken a dose of it and I am satisfied that it was Mntilrin Mrs Mary E Young testified I reside iNorth Salt Lake Several months ago I sent word to relatives at Spanish Fork asking them to send me a girl for housework house-work Two of my cousins came up in April with the deceased and she went to work for me In June last she left my house and went to work for Mr Viglini She remained at his home until five weeks ago when she returned to North Salt Lake and wont to work at my sons She was of a happy disposition dis-position and Was a straightforward virtuous vir-tuous girl to the best of my belief I do not know of any attachment having sprung up between her and any of the men at Vig linis brick yard I saw her several times yesterday afternoon and at S oclock last evening she came over to my house for some yeast She appeared to be in the best of spirits and helped me with my work She was in the parlor with my daughter and some young folks until 10 oclock when she went home Some time later my con came and aroused me and asked me to go to his house as quickly as possible as MATILDA WAS VERY SICK When I reached the place I found the girl in a spasm When she was a little easier I asked her what was the matter She < answered I am dying Then I asked her if she had taken poison She answered that she had but I could elicit nothing further fur-ther from her I do not know that anyone was keepiug company with her A young man named McCorkle who boards at my place has accompanied her to my sons a few times A gentleman named Johnson was at my house last evening and when S he went into the parlor Mr McCorkle i came out and sat in the room with me I When Mathilda camojout she bad eUi goodnight good-night and I was a little surprised that Mo Corklo did not offer to see her home I know that Mr Johnson once took Matilda home but cannot say whether or not there was any feeling between them John T Berry testified I made a call at Mrs Youngs house last evening and saw the deceased there She appeared to be in her usual spirits and there was nothing In her conduct to attract attention I went over to Briant Youngs house after it was found that the Rirl had taken poison poi-son but was not there when she died Dr Ewing testified that he had viewed the body and found no marks of violence From the testimony he was satisfied tha 4 death resulted from strychnine poisoning This closed the toslimony and the jury returned a verdict setting forth that the I eceased came to her death from the effects I if arsenic poison administered by her own hand with suicidal intent |
