Show REMARKABLE SURGICAL FEAT A Boys Lee Being Spliced by the Leg of a Living DoA Do-A remarkable surgical operation has been performed at the Charity hospital en Blackwells Island portion of a living dogs foreleg has been engrafted with a boys leg to take the place of a bone that was missing The boy and the dog wore bound together on a cot and at the expiration expira-tion of ten or twelve days if the dogs bone unites with the boys the operation will be completed and a surgeons knife will then cut the flesh with which the dog is now connected with the boy The operation is an experiment and was performed on Sunday afternoon in an operating op-erating room ou the top floor of the hospital building by Dr A M Pbelps professor of orthopedic surgery in the university of New York and the Post Graduate Medical school Should the examination prove successful suc-cessful it would be another illustration ot the great advance made in surgery Dr Phelps assistants were Dr JamesE Kelly of New York and DrCDRoyhouse surgeon of the charity hospital Tae patient pa-tient who is a boy about fourteen years of age had a right leg much shorter than the left A space above his light ankle lacks bony tissue and the foot dangles in the air the boy not having any power over it because held in place only by the muscles mus-cles He was given ether and when unconscious un-conscious was laid upon the operating table The boys clothes were removed and the right leg shaved This was done for the double purpose of removing the hair and also the outside scaly covering which is common to all The lej wsw then washed and soiubbed with a brush of bristles bris-tles Tne sk n was titn scrubbed wi h a solution so-lution of corrosive sublimate anti toweLs dampened with the solution were wound around the leg and ankle leaving exposed only a small portion to be operated upon An Esmarch bandage is then placed abovo the knee to prevent tile bleeding when the incision is made Then the cicatdcial tissue was carefully removed exposing to view the ends of the bones All newly formed tissue was then scraped away and all blood vessels were tied and the Etmarch bandage removed Then after applying the plaster bandage the wound was ready to receive the dogs leg bone The dog a black spaniel was brought in incased in a plaster of Paris cast and under the effects of an aurcsthetic His right fore leg the head and tail fire free but the rest of tho body is immovable immov-able The hair is cut off the dogs leg and a cut is made in the dogs leg at a point where the knee ought to be The head of ulna one of the bones in the fore leg is then sawed off and the bone prepared so that while it has no bopy connection with tho upper part of the leg yet there is a perfect circulation of Vilftftrl = t li rt r olAlinfl thC VinHli lUllR rA vvvuuus vu w quires the keenest knowledge of the distribution dis-tribution of the arteries in the dogs leg The bone is about an inch and a half in length and is connected to the place pro pared in tho boys leg next to the bone to which it is to be grafted and bound to it by bands of plaster ofParis The vocal cords of the dog have been cut so that he cannot whine and while painless to him it will relieve re-lieve tho boy from the annoyance of the dogs whinings Yesterday both the boy and the dog were reportea to be doing well and the physicians are sanguine of the operation being successful New York Commercial Advertiser |
