| Show BLOCKED BY SNOW Our Local Roads Batting With the Beautiful I PLIGHT OP THE UTAH NEVADA The Utah Central and Rio Grande Trains Get Through Ihe Central Pacific in Snow All the trains 6n the Utah Central division divi-sion came in yesterday The last train came up from the south about 10 oclock last night being about twelve hours late All of the trains from both north and south arrived about so many hours late on account ac-count of heavy snows The snow had drifted to such a height on the track between the Hot springs and Woods Cross as has not been known for years All day yesterday men were atI I work shoveling the crystallite whiteness which hat blown down from the mountains near by and at 4 oclock yesterday afternoon the through passenger passen-ger train from Ogden came down by means of two engines and a snow plough The regular passenger trains running north did not leave til 4 and J oclock ester es-ter l afternoon The southbound passenger left at 9 oclock yesterday morning instead of 7130 owing to the fact of a large snow drift at the point of the mountain where the train from Milford due here at liO at night got stuck I remained all night in its cold situation unable to move and arrived in the city at 7 oclock yesterday morning The officials report the road open now on the Utah Central division and trains will leave on schedule time today The Rio Grand Western has been able to keep its track clear by means of the snowplow snow-plow which was kept constantly at work So far no trains have been reported delayed de-layed on this road The Utah Nevada is completely blockaded block-aded Four locomotives went west to help the passenger train from Tnnfilo which has been in then snow at Erda in Tooele county since Friday morning The passengers among whom are Messrs F M L man and H S Gowan were without with-out food butit is thought relief was sent I from Tooele and probably the most have I returned to that city At a late hour last night the train had not got five miles farther far-ther this way or past Nobles where there is a telephone station staton They have no snow plow on this line and seem wholly unprepared for the great snowfall of this winter One of tneir locomotives loco-motives took a tumble yesterday on the way out as a relief party and some time was spent before it was got right ride up The four engineers had reached no farther than Garfield at 2 oclock in the afternoon Mr Samuel Riter is with the party and they are bound to get through The Echo and Park City branch has kept up pretty well for some time but since Thursday it has been snowed under The last passenger train that left this city got fastened in a snow bank a few miles from Park City and the passengers tracked their way to the city Altogether the roads in this section have suffered more from snow during the past few days than at any other similar period in their history The Central Pacific is still in the snow somewhere out in Nevada or California 31r Harrington Designs Mr Daniel Harrington secretary of the Salt Lake Fort Douglas Salt Lake Si Eastern and Utah Western railways has resigned his retirement to take effect February Feb-ruary 1st Mr Harrington will go east in the early fall of this year for the purpose of taking finishing course in the law department de-partment of the Michigan University at Ann Arbor Pending which time however how-ever he will engage in the land and collection collec-tion business having his office with attorneys attor-neys Driggs Waddell The Southern Pacific Schemes The Southern Pacific Railroad company has purchased a large tract of land lying close to Los Angeles for the purpose of building new stock yards This will be pleasant news to stockmen who take cattle catte out to Los Angeles as the yards now in use are entirely insufficient for the requirements require-ments of that market How Fast are We Going 1 How can you tell how fast a train is going go-ing This is the answer a railroad man gives Every time a car passes over a ges rai joint there is a distinct click Just count the number of truck clicks in twenty seconds and you have the number of miles the train is going per hour This is a simple sim-ple matter of arithmetic as the length of the rail is uniform Guatemala Concessions The sale of the Southern or Guatemalala Central railroad has proved o fiasco The Frenchmen did not come to time with their 21000000 loan and after extending the time from week to week until yesterday which was the final day the whole arrangement ar-rangement fell through and Huntingtons people in New York telegraphed to their agent in Central America to have nothing further to do with the Frenchmen or with the Guatemaltecos as the Americans were thoroughly disgusted with the many false promises and unbusinesslike methods of the native speculators and their European colleagues col-leagues The people of Guatemala themselves them-selves arc also thoroughly disgusted with their government and it is quite likely that a public indignation meeting will be held to present the matter to Congress when it opens on March 1 The real cause of the trouble is this same railroad contract quoted above When this contract was ratified by Congress at the special request of the president the government foolishly spent some thirty or forty thousand dollars on a big spree and banquet to celebrate the event Now the people are groaning over the waste of money taken from an already impoverished impover-ished treasury All the government em ployes are months in arrears of salaries and the government is living a hand to mouth existence at the mercy of brokers and usurers who loan money to the government gov-ernment upon the daily hypothecation of the national revenues Touching upon railroad matters the concession of the Guatemala Central railroad granted in 1SSO grants to that company the right to build the Northern road referred to above on the same terms as in the Cottu contract but the late secretary of public works Don Salvador Barrutia completely ignored the clause in the Central railroad concession and tried to rush another scheme through Congress but got defeated and had to resign
