Show Pioneer Day at Bountiful Early at daybreak the inhabitants of East Bountiful were aroused from their lumbers by the booming of small cannon guns and tho strains of music from the brass bands which were around about ser nadmg different quarters of the town At 10 oclock the marshal of the day and assis ants had formed the procession into line and a start was made for tho route pre riously mapped out which covered about four miles The following was the order of tho parade pa-rade Marshal Joseph Mabey in uniform fol b y a band of horses mounted by boys representing rep-resenting Indian squaws Mexicans and next came an oldtime wagon representing old time trains on the plains with its wornout covers jade horse and mule with a barrel of water tied to the side ana a cow trailing behind Then came a representation of CIA Mormon Mor-mon palace forty years ago There was a log hut mounted upon a wagon with its oldtime pioneers sitting on toe ground outside out-side with overalls that looked like crazy quilts with patches This was very unique and interesting Then followed a very neat exhibition of fruits and vegetables in three tastefully arranged wagons after which the East Bountiful brass nand followed up in a decorated I dec-orated wagon playing to cheer the crowd of spectators Now came the sweet singers of the choir with a beautiful banner and a tine turnout turn-out After which was seen one of tho most amusing scenes of the day a reminder of the hand cart days pulled by men and women over over mountains and plains for thousands of miles This was described minutely with its buffalo chips bedding cooking utensils etc The old folks were seen in a wagon bowery bow-ery of trees with their dear old hces smiling with happiness The Relief society wagon was beautiful and tteir tanner vas the gem of the day Y M M I A was represented by the best boys of the settlement with a very handsome banner in red silver and gold the design of W 0 Willey Heber Holbrook the orator of the day was next seen gayly mounted on a fine horse Next followed a vehicle containing old Grandma Sessions ninetythree years old Then came a beautifully arranged wagon load of lovely girls the Y M M I I A with four pretty white horses and also containing a creditable homemade banner ban-ner Three or four wagons loaded with primary children next came in handsomely decorated wagons colors red white and bluewith a handsome white silk banner Then followed a beehive shaped wagon loaded with little children all dressed in tho same manner representing Utahs best crop A neat exhibition of industry was shown by ladies washing churning and making bread neatly dressed Then followed several trades represented such as blacksmith black-smith country liddlers watch repairers ice cream venders etc and then a large number of citizens in vehicles followed in the wake While the procession was on its rounds through the settlement the whole assemblage stopped at President Anson VCalls residence and didhim honor bythe playing of the bands singing of the choir etc The old gentleman has been and stil is very feeble in health and has been con fine to his home for several months and as ho sat in his arm chair on the porch and I viewed the deference paid to him by the presentation of flowers and cheers of the crowd the tears welled up in his eyes and gave expression to the feelings of bis heart The afternoon services were held before a thronged congregation in the Tabernacle who listened interestingly despite the intense in-tense heat to tho excellent programme of exercises the chief of which was the oration of Professor Holbrook The balance the day was given to racing rac-ing and games and in the evening a ball was prepared and dancing was indulged in until the next morning Great creditis duo to all who assistedjin the ardous task of preparing so successful a celebration ROBERT L AsDCRSOS |
