Show DR OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES He Passes his Eightyfirst Birthday at Home Receiving Friends and Visitors Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch BOSTON Aug 30Dr Oliver Wendell Holmes yesterday celebrated his eighty first birthday in an appropriate manner by remaining home in his Beacon street residence resi-dence and receiving numerous friends and visitors who poured in upon him all day with congratulations He was the recipient of many beautiful and costly presents which pleased him exceedingly He was considerably depressed however as his mind went back to his recent bereavements and he spoke feelingly to a correspondent of the unhappy year which had not only taken away his beloved wife but bad also cut off in their prime his esteemed friends Bernard Carpenter and John Bovle Olieilly Ho said nothing before had ever made him feel so aged as did their death |
