Show President Wests BeBiunation The board of directors of the chamber of commerce held a special meeting last night for the purpose of receiving Governor Wests resignation as president of the chamber prior t his departure for Washington Wash-ington D C this morning This step on the part of the governor was taken owing t the fact that ho is going 10 Washington to engage in a partnership for the practice of the legal profession with Mr Will Carlisle of Kentucky the eldest son of Senator Carlisle The meeting was called to order by Governor West who stated that he had on accunt West business relations which demanded his presence elsewhere decided that he would tender his resignation as president of the chamber cham-ber of commerce He spoke with considerable feeling of the benefits which the chamber of commerce had brought to the city from its inception and he appreci cats the importance of the work which lies before the chamber President Wests resignation having been filed with the secretary was then read by the secretary as follows SALT LAm CITY Dec 51890 To the Board of Directors of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce GentlemenI hereby tender my resignation resig-nation as president of your board l should at an earlier period in the year have done this had known that my Btay away from the city would have been so prolonged pro-longed My action is more prompted by the fact that my absence from the city will prevent my performing the duties of the office As you well know while I was away from the city Mr Fred Simon your efficient and faithful first vicepres ident was zealous and vigilant in directing and attending to the affairs of the chamber and therefore it is with less reluctance that 1 retire so near the time of making up the annual report a that duty will be lelt to one who has for most of the year been in the active management man-agement of the work of the chamber I tender the board and its officers my sincere thanks for uniform courtesy and consideration which they have shown me upon a occasions My earnest wish is that the chamber may prosper and continue in its work of Usefulness iu building up a great and beautiful beau-tiful city Very respectfully CALEB W WEST At the conclusion of the reading of the resignation first vicepresident Simon took the chair for the purpose of putting the motion on Mr Ricketts motion and Mr Wantlands second that the resignation resigna-tion of President West be accepted and that ho be tendered a vote of thanks for the earnestness with which he had labored in behalf of the chamber of commerce and the city and for the uniform courtesy with which he had treated the board of directors and the officers of the chamber Mr Simon suggested the propriety of conferring upon Governor West the honor of electing him an honorary life member of the chamber of commerce Mr Wantland offered a resolution embodying em-bodying the idea which was seconded by Messrs Kicketts and Calmer Mr Simon took occasion to occaion say that he most seriously regretted that Gov West had found it necessary to tender his I resignation but that while Governor West was going away from the city he knew that he would continue to be as warm a supporter and as ardent an admirer of Salt Lake city a he ha shown himself since his residence here Governor West thanked theembers for the honor conferred upon him and said that although his business would take him away from Salt Lake but still he should always regard Salt Lake a his city and would at all times and all places do everything every-thing in his power to advance the interests of the chamber of commerce and of the te city He was going to Washington for tho purpose of engaging in the practice of his profession and would at all times make the interests of Utah and Utahs people his special care On motion the meeting then adjourned t meet on Thursday the llth at S oclock lifter which the members bade the ex president a warm goodby |
