| Show START RIGHT At 10 oclock Wednesday morning the President approved and signed the Idaho admission bill his act beingall that was required re-quired to transform the territory into a state THE Hcu VLU warmly congratulates the commonwealth on its emancipation from a condition of political deprivation and slavery one of independence We have opposed statehood for Idaho and believe our opposition was wise and proper we also believe that the time will come when the great majority of tho people up there will acknowledge that the position of this journal was right in the contest which has just been broulht to a finish all along we have had assurances from many of the most intelligent and bedt men in the community that they were in full sympathy with the course pursued by Tug HEIAID during the statehood battle and as the weeks and months shall roll by and passion and prejudice be supplanted by coolness and reason more of the good men up there will say that we have been right and their best friend all the time But what we want to do this morning in addition to congratulating the people of Idaho on the breaking of the shackles which have so long bound them is to utter word of caution to the just freed citizens They have gained freedom and they should not bo careful not to use it in such a way as to place them in worse bondage than that from which they have escaped The coming few years will be fraught with dangers which can ba escaped ouiy by the exercise of great caution and wisdom Recklessness now would be followed by i long years of suffering and repentance Incaution and extravagance today will bring Severe penalties Too great haste at tho start will cause delay in the future retarding the growth and development of the state instead of facilitating them As we unerstandit the governor must call ah election r within thirty days for choosing state officers and t the new machinery into i lft operation At that election greater r I wisdom and better judgment should be exercised ex-ercised by the people than they have ever I before shown The ottJcehunters and the spoilsmen should bo avoided and ignored j and only those selected who canbe trusted I with the duty of steering the now bark j safclyanjlkeepingin the rightcoureThero I I aro many bmoadminded conservative safe i t men in Idaho and if these shall bo taken t for the offices there will be apprehension j regarding tho state which possesses limitless t limit-less resources and will attract the people II and means to develop them in due time THE HEUALDS best wishes go with Idaho and all our hopes aro for her prosperity I i I pros-perity |
