Show THE LAW IS SUPREME Th President Speaks Upon This Theme TO iH VETERANS AT TOPEKA A Tender Reference to St Joseph as the Outfitting Out-fitting Point for Pioneers Going to the Far West ATCHISON Kansas Oct 10The President I Presi-dent arose early this morning and when St Joseph was approached he and his party lad only time to hastily take a cup of coffee cof-fee before entering the city At the Union depot an immense crowd was assembled Conspicuous i the assemblage was the Custer post of the Grand Army of the Republic Re-public which was drawn up in line and made a passage way for the President and party and acted as their escort until the neighboring hotel was reached where I public reception was held As the President Presi-dent and Secretary Tracy appeared on the balcony in front of the hotel Colonel A C Doves general passenger agent of the Hannibal St Joseph railroad introduced them in a short speech which was received with cheers by the crowd The President thanked the crowd for its cordial welcome In the course of his remarks re-marks he said Many years ago 1 read of St Joseph I know something of its history his-tory when instead of being a railroad city it was a place for outfitting those slow and toilsome trains that ore the early pioneers towards California and the far west Those days were days not t be dispised Those means of communication were slow but they bore men and women full of cour geand patience to do for us on the Pacific coast and in the great west the work of peaceful > conquest that has added greatly to the glory and prosperity of our country Ve are here as American citizens not as partisans We are here as comrades of the late war or i there are those who under other banners fought for what seemed to them right we are here to say one and all that God know what was best for the country coun-try when he cast the issue in favor of the union and the constitution ApplauseJ At the conclusion of the Presidents remarks re-marks the party returned to the rotunda of > the depot where the President shook hands with the crowd as they filed through At 720 the train pulled out of St Joseph amid the cheering of the crowd The run to Atchison was made without incident beyond the cheers of the crowds at the depots as the train passed by Atchison was reached at 845 where a large crowd was assembled |
