Show HE IS THE MAN I Cleveland Will be the Standard Bearer Says an Old Democrat To the Editor of THE HERALD Since exPresident Clevelands declaration declara-tion against free and unlimited coinage in his Cooper Union address has engendered EO much comment it may not be out of place for an old western Democrat to note a few facts which we in our eagerness for more money ere liable to overlook First we notice that Mr Cleveland was always opposed to a free unlimited and independent in-dependent coinage of silver regardless of national lines That there are two sides to this silver question none can doubt One admirable trait of character in Mr Cleveland is he is truthful and will express ex-press his opinion fully and freely though it keep him from the presidency And while this is trne the great statesman is just as true to his party as he is to his conviction of right If Mr Cleveland should be chosen as standard bearer of the great Democratic party in 1892 which he will bo if he lives and is elected President of these United States upon a platform with a free coinage plank in it which is sure to be the case he will never veto a free coinage bill if it comes up in good shape But we must admit that thi free unlimited and independent expresses very much And that nations like individuals sometimes in their eagerness to grasp a good thing may reach a little too far One other fact wo wish to note thatMr Cleveland Cleve-land has given this matter much thought and while it may sound like a harsh expression expres-sion on his part all who will carefully investigate in-vestigate the matter will find that he is in this as he always has been just about right Tariff and not silver will be the great issue of 1892 We want a silver bill that will provide for the free coinage of American silver Only this and nothing more And it will come in due time Deep waters move slow but sure A DEMOCRAT |
