Show A Great Campaign in Illinois a CHICAGO Nov 5Never in the history of Illinois politics have the tickets of the representative party been scratched to such an extent as in the present election Even is there now a possibility that official returns may modify the really apparent results on the state tickets The elements which have entered into the present campaign cam-paign and contributed to a great extent to scratching are the Farmers Mutual Benefit association the agitation of the compulsory school law and the Independent Independ-ent Citizens ticket in Cook county The result also shows that there has been an immense amount of tradingon oc lanl state tickets not only in Cook county but throughout the state where local con tests were heated indications tonight point to a much larger Lutheran or school vote than was anticipated by Either parties I is doubtless due to Raabs expressed op position to the law in its present form and to Ambergs acquiescence in its modifica tions that these candidates although of different political parties but both of German Ger-man nativity score the immense vote which they did in all localities where these sectarian societies have agitated the school question In Chicago alone Raab appears to run no less than 8000 ahead of his colleague on tho Democratic ticket As the greatest opposition to the school law was confined to Chicago and Cook county confned coupled with the immense foreign speak ing element in this city fully explains Raabs phenomenal strength for superin tendent public instruction I hroughout the southern na1 nf thn state to which is principally confined the strength of the Farmers Mutual Benefit Beneft association the Republican state ticket appears to have lost heavily The fact that Wilson Democratic candidate for treasurer is a high official in the Farmers Mutual Benefit association accounts for his popularity in tnat locality where the membership of that organization is the greatest On the face of incomplete and estimated returns tonight the result on the state ticket in Illinois is as follows Franz Amberg Republican candidate for state treasurer is elected by 4000 plurality over Wilson Democrat Raab Democratic Democratc candidate for state superintendent of public instruction has 10000 plurality publc Richard Edwards pluralty indications indi-cations are that three Republican candi dates for trustees of the state university are elected by small majorities LaterThis evening Congressman Fihian telegraphed the Associated Press asserting that complete returns assure his re elec ton by 590 plurality A dispatch 1e from Kankakeo also indicates prooably that complete returns may defeat Payson |
