Show The Painter Dead Hugh S Wallace the painter of Salt Lake who was removed from 247o Jefferson Jeffer-son avenue in an insano condition to tho city hospital Wednesday last died yesterday yester-day morning at 3 oclock The following jury was impaneled before Coroner M I Allen B Ternes Ed R Strong E T Dobson and an inquest held at tho hospital k yesterday afternoon The first witness called was Dr Powers who testified I was called to Miss Reeds residence 2475 Jefferson avenue When I arrived there I found the man in an unconscious uncon-scious condition There was no one there but tho ladies of the house Miss Reed and her sisters They seemed quite anxious to have the man removed as he annoyed the sick persons in the house I made an examination of the man and found a bullet wound on the right side of his head about four inches above the ear In fact I found two wounds another about au inch from where the bullet entered the head which I think was caused by a fracture I took out a portion of the skull and removed the bullet which was shown to the jury and proved to be 3S calibre He came to his death by the clot of blood pressing upon the brain The doctor was certain the deceased could have been saved had medical aid been called in time On examination several powder marks wee found on the deceaseds hat Officer H C Hansen was then calledI was at the station yesterday between 11 I and 12 oclock and was called by telephone message to 2475 Jefferson avenue When I arrived at the house the lady Miss Reed met me at the door and told me she had a roomer there and she didnt know 4 what was the matter with him I sent a man down to see what was best to do The lady told me there were sick folks in the house and she thought it best to have himremoved as she could not attend at-tend to so many sick persons at a time The man was unconscious when 1 saw him He was suffering intense pain and kept rubbing his hands over his head tore the bandage off and exposed the wound while I was there 1 made a search of the room for the revolver but it could not be found anywhere Miss Lizzie Reed was then called and testified in substance as follows Mr Wallace L Wal-lace came to my house and engaged a room on Wednesday morning He then went dovn town and returned to the house about 7 oclock and put his revolver and articles of toilet on the bureau I spoke with him on Thursday and he wanted to know if he disturbed anyone during the night as he had been quite restless I told him he hadnt disturbed anyone very much He told me he had lived in Colorado four years and in Salt Lake the last two years I assed him how he met with the accident and he said he was out in the mountains and in fooling with his gun accidentally discharged itI told him we had better get a doctor for him and he replied he didnt want any as he didnt have any use for doctors Mr G Reed was next called and his statements corroborated those of his sister who preceded him Jud J Ballantyne was called and said I 1 was at the house of Mrs Reed and watched Officer Hansen and Chief Metcalf search tle house His valise was opened but I sa nothing 1ttie shape of 3Yeappns and nothing indicating anything of the kind The man was unconscious when I saw him last and was in considerable pain and agony I was there when he tore the bandage off his head I didnt talk with him when be was in his right mind Mrs Wallace wife of the deceased was the last witness called and testified I am not the lawful wife of Mr Wallace I vas married to him about six years ago in Denver and have been divorced about two months I live in Salt Lake and keep furnished fur-nished rooms in the Quinn block at 222 South Main street over the Bank of Salt Lake I last saw Mr Wallace on Wednesday he complained some of not feeling welL I next heard of him by a telegram which read come to Ogden on 5 oclock train bring box I left with you All is well I answered the telegram saying I could not go that evening but if it was t really necessary to wire me again I came up last evening at 540 and found him unconscious un-conscious when I arrived I knew he had a revolver but didnt know he brought it A with him I dont think he did the act intentionally in-tentionally When asked if the deceased had any relatives in Salt Lake she replied iio but he had a brotherinPhiladelphiaon in Pittsbur and two in ComoColorado She said they were always on friendly terms but the reason of divorce was nonsupport The lady identified a few articles of clothing cloth-ing etc and was excused The jury then closeted themselyes rendered verdict that the deceased came to his death October 16 1S90 by means of a pistol shot wound inflicted in-flicted by his own hands with suicidal intent in-tent on the 10th day of October 1S90 |
