Show Close of the PanAmerican Congress WASHINGTON April 19At noon today the PanAmerican conference adjourned sine die after the transaction of some routine business and the adoption of resolutions pledging tho sympathetic association of the members of the conference with the quadrocentennial celebration celebra-tion ot the discovery of America and expressing their gratitude for hospitality A motion to adjourn ad-journ sine die was made and put to a vote Blame rising to announce the result said Gentlemen I withhold for a moment the word of final adjournment in order that I may express ex-press to you the profound satisfaction with which the government of the United States regards re-gards the work accomplished by the International Interna-tional conference Tho extent and value of all that has been worthily achieved by your conference confer-ence cannot be measured today we stand too near it Time will define and heighten the estimation esti-mation of your work experience will confirm our faith the final result will be your vindication vindica-tion and your triumph If In this closing hour the conference had but been to celebrate cele-brate we should not dare to call tho worlds attention to the deliberate confident con-fident solemn dedication of two great continents to peace and to prosperity which have peace for their foundations We hold up this new magna charts which abolishes war and substitutes arbitration between American republics aa the fruit of the great International American comerence The delivery of the address was characterized character-ized by Elaines customary deliberate emphasis empha-sis and also gave evidence of deep feeling off his part The members of the conference thes took carriages to the executive mansion to pay their parting respects to the President The delegates were received by the President in the east room shortly alter noon The President Pres-ident spoke as follows I find in this parting call of the delegates to the conference of Amer can states both pain and pleasure I participate partici-pate In the regret which the delegates from the United States feel who are to part with those from the other countries I take pleasure In the knowledge of the fact that jour labors have been brought to a happy conclusion I remark with pleasure the proposition which will bo productive of peace among the American states represented in the conference It will be without with-out excuse if one of them shall lift a hostile hand against the other We gave you the other day a review of a small detachment of the American army not to show you we have an army but that we have none I that our securities securi-ties are lodged with our people and that they are safe la conclusion I find much to approve in the friendly purposes of the conference toward this government and I will bid each of you a heartfelt goodbye Applause |
