celebrations are infrequent b nt because Archbishop Kenrick has filled these y ears with usefulness and and good were it not f rtne fact that on a notjole occasion ho in c irred the displeasure of the holy see by de e aring boldly his unbelief in the infallibility of t he Pope he would now bo a prince of tho c lurch Grand pontifical mass commemorative of the occasion began at 8 oclock in the historic old athedral on Walnut street leading reprosenta tives of the Roman Catholic hierarchy of the United States officiating The jubilee sermon was delivered by Archbishop Ryan of Philn clphia Proceeding mass there was an 1m ressivo procession from the cathedral Dorian school situated next to the church to the main entrance of the cathedral In tho march out from the yard and up the steps of the hurce the venerable archbishop walked under a canopy which was carried by attendants ap pointed for the occasion The mass which was most Impressive and elaborate was celeorated by Cardinal Gibbons and Archbishop Ryan assisted by a number of priests The altar was dressed in magnificent style with flowers evergreens and colors The ceremony concluded with a solemn episcopal blessing The music of the mass was given on a grand scale The mass selected for the occasion was jounods Mosse Solennel do Sainte Cecile rendered by fifty trained voices accompanied by an orchestra and organ A new and novel feature in the music was furnished by tho Franciscan fathirs a select choir of whom rendered several numbers The church was decorated on a grand scale for the occasion Tho sanctuary was aim ost filled with rare plants and flowers illuminated globes and rich colors Largo banners were suspended from the high coiling and the pilast ers and columns were fairly covered with bunt ng Two thrones on the epistle and gospel ides were all decorated with colors appropri ate to the dignitaries who occupied them Ban lerettes with fitting inscriptions and lllustra lions were suspended between the columns Archbishop Kyan In the course of his sermon reviewed the life of Archbishop Kennckin all its phases religious business and charitable and spoke his great sanctity and fortitude After pontifical mass all the visiting arch bishops and priests were driven to the Lindell hotel where a banquet was tendered Arch bishop Kendrick and his guests Archbishop Kenrick was seated at the bead of the table Cardinal Gibbons on his right and Archbishop Elder on his left After the menu was finished Vicar General Brady read an address from the clergy of the diocese to Ken rick who made a abort
