Show In the Senate WASHINGTON Jan 29The Senate bill creating the office of fourth assistant post mastergeneral passed The Senate then proceededto consideration of the apportionment appor-tionment bill and Edmunds addressed the Senate An amendment to increase the representation represen-tation of Arkansas from six to seven was rejected yeas 32 nays 3 Davis McMil Ian Paddock Stewart and Washburn voting vot-ing with the Democrats An amendment to increase Minnesotas representation by one was rejected yeas 31 nays 32 Casey Voted with the Democrats Dem-ocrats two of whom did not vote An I amendment to increase Missouris representition by one was rejected Davis Paddock and Washburn voting yea with the Democrats and Casey McMillan and Stewartvoting nay An amendment to increase the representation represen-tation of New York from thirtyfour to thirtyfive was rejected 29 to 3D Davis and Paddock were the only Republicans voting in the affirmative Davis then withdrew with-drew his amendment fixing the total number num-ber of Representatives at G Berry offered an amendment fixing the total number at 339 giving one more each t Arkansas Minnesota and New York I was laia on the table Davis and Wash burn voting in the negative The bill then passed exactly as it came from the House yeas 37 nays 23 a strict party vote The Senate took up the House bill for tho adjustment of the accounts of laborers etc under the eighthour law thus mailing mail-ing it unfinished business Blair consented con-sented to havo it laid aside temporarily for the army appropridtion bill Morgan objected ob-jected however and on motion of Allison the army Dill was taken up displacing the eighthour bill On motion of Hawley the proviso was stricken out of the bill that no officer shall receive pay on the retired list while receiving re-ceiving a salary as a government official The committee amendment to strike out the proviso limiting the rates to be paid for transportation on land grant roads to 50 per cent of the rates charged private parties and to substitute for it a proviso that the rates shall be such as the secretary of war shall deem just and reasonable not to exceed j per cent of the charges to private parties was discussed at length and went over Adjourned |
