Show THE ASHLEY HORRORI I Further Particulars ot the Drowning of the Two YOUHK Men To the Editor of THE HERALD A sad and fatal accident by which two young men lost their lives occurred hereon here-on the 2Sth inst The circumstances as they happened were as follows A washout had happened to the lower canal near the Pioneer or Reynolds flouring flour-ing mill washing out a gulch such as only those living on a sand and clay mixed soil can fully realize cutting a channel fully fifteen feet deep The people turned out and soon had the wash filled up again putting put-ting in brush and rock at the back about five or six feet high and filling up in front with loose dirt The dirt being put in with teams and scrapers it was supposed to be solid and safe and the water was turned in The road having been washed out the embankment embank-ment was being used to cross on The water filled up the deep hole in front of the embankment people on foot and on horseback still crossing when a break occurred oc-curred at the bottom and the water com menced rushing through The two men left in charge started for the headgates to shut off the water and while several persons per-sons with your correspondent were watching watch-ing the terrific rush of water that was fast washing oat the dirt from underneath Mr J P Wimmer of Dale came up on horseback horse-back and though warned that it was unsafe un-safe proceeded to cross on the embankment embank-ment As he reached the place under which the waters were rushing his horse broke through and went down Mr Wim mer clinging to the bank and crying for help Your correspondent together with a young man named Hill grabbed one hand while another young man named Harris Workman and a son of Mr Brad Bird rushed up to seize the other when another cave of dirt took place and the three Mr Wimmer Workman and Bird were plunged into the whirling rushing mud and water beneath Mr Wimmer was washed out on the brush and rock dam below be-low and was taken out alive but the bodies of the two young men were only recovered after a search of four hours one of them terribly mangled by the struggling and plunging of the drowning horse e I N JACOB AsHLEY May 31 1S90 |
