Show THE ELECTION In all Tnt HERAID bas said during the school campaign not one word has reflected hooted on candidates of the Liberal party for rositions on the board of education Our contention has been and is that i will be better for the youth of the city if the schools continue t be conducted on non sectarian and nonpartisan lines Since we have had public or district schools here care has been exercised to keep them free from politics and religion as the law commands com-mands This liasbeea dono in tho face of the fsjct that the overwhelming majority of the parents of the children attending these schools were members of a certian church and belon ed to certain belonged a crtin political party The parents were In harmony with the American theory and practice regardIng regard-Ing the public schools Whenever it was their desire that their offspring should bo Instructed in matters of religion the children dren were placed in schools where religious religi-ous teaching was included in the course I will be better for the children i this order of things shall be continued and the F schools held free from the and school political religious re-ligious prejudices which are so pronounced i this community The Peoples party has shown in its long control of the schools that it can be nonpartisan non-partisan On the other hand th Liberals have carried their partisan and religious hates into everything Vo find these hates and prejudices in every department of government and in every office under Liberal control They are manifest in the district schools which have fallen into the bands of the party where in every instance in-stance teachers have been selected because be-cause they were opposed t tho Mormons in religion and in politics Schools have materially deteriorated in excellence and lost in membership through unwise partisan changes of teachers Some of the most flourishing and prosperous prosper-ous of our district schools have degenerated into third rate affairs from no other cause than the replacing of competent and well liked teachers with others whose religious and poltc sentiments were radically opposed op-posed to those of the parents of the children child-ren I the Liberals shall succeed at the polls on Monday every district school in the city will be opened next September with a teacher carefully selected on account ac-count of his enmity towards the fathers and mothers of threefourths of the children child-ren in Salt Lake Every one of the teachers teach-ers who belongs to tho Peoples party or iso member of tho Mormon church will have t go and one part of the instruction in the schools will b t lead the pupils away from the belief of their parents Already prominent men in the Liberal campaign L have been negotiating with antiMormon I teachers for city schools promising them situations in the event of a party victory tomorrow When THE HeRALD says this it knows whereof it speaks Our only desire in the premises js that L the rights of parents may be protected the children guarded in their education and the schools maintained on a proper plane We know it will be best for all if the People shall retain control |
