Show THE COEUR DALENEI Threats to Shut Down the Mines Next Week I I I 8 IT TO DEFY THE RAILROADS I I O r Break Up the Miners1 Union Both Claims Made Other Mining Mater This place has had its full share of snow he past two weeks scarcely a day passes hat it does not continue to snow and about two nights in the week i rains followed b y a chinook wIndand then more snow AH varieties climate except sunshine Its i It-s the finest place in the world to develop a mild case of is grippe into a thorough chronic form The town Is quiet and thefi miners and business men feel gloomy over the report that has gone out that all the mines of the Coaur dAlene country would shut down January 15 There is some truth in this report as the mine owners held a meeting recently at Spokane Falls i n order to discuss the best methods to pursue The trouble the mine owners claim is on account of the railroad companies threatening to raise the shipping rate 2 per ton on all grades of ores This the mine owners do not propose to stand and claim THEY WILL SHUT DOWN before they will submit Should they shut down it will have a paralyzing effect on the miners and business men as they have had but few paydays lately There is a strong minors union here and some of the mem bers seem to think the threatened shut down is for the purpose of breaking up the organization by driving out its members and then cut wages down to 3 per day What truth there is in the above I am unable un-able to say but in my opinion it dont look reasonable as all the mines now being worked are paying well and have large bodies of ore in sight and it would not pay them to ATTEMPT TO CUT WAGES II so all good miners would leave and just at present there are too few good miners in the market One good miner paid good fair wages is of more value to a company I than one halfdozen of the cheap stragglers I who go around posing as miners with no experience whatever and too often in the I handling of explosives killing themselves I and all who are unfortunate enough to be near them It was well said by a prominent promi-nent mining man in Montana that the reason so many accidents happened underground under-ground and in shafts was through the ig norence of men who knew nothing about mining TIE JUNES AND MILLS hero are running as smoothly as usual and when the litigation which has hampered tho progress of this camp so long shall havo J been settled the camp will shal output of ore second to none Next summer will probably see better times in the Cccur d Alene The sale of the Morning mine in Mullan will place that property the among producers of the coun try and it will be a bright day for Mullan when the Morning looms up ngain By the way Wallace is progressing it Is the central city of the country It is the jumping off point for the gentleman tough gentoman dude sport and prize tighter The town has its sporting club und ito fake prize fights I also has a bachelor cluo whose members aim at matrimony which is to finally terminate the existence of the club In the newspaper field Wallace is ahead with a new publication called the Cceur d Alene Barbarian I is a newsy sheet to be gotten up by a barbarian and will be racy reading for the average Cccur d Al one savage X X X WARDNER Idaho Jan 5 X |
