Show I Tim WArT WATER 1 Armeal ofthe North Benchers to r the City Council WILLING TO SPEND THOUSANDS I I Which Will Transform the I In Improvements Wi North Bencn and Add u Million to the Valuation in a Year Among the flood of petitions which I poured into the city council last Tuesday rash of business night was one which in the ness attracted little attention It was however one of the most important matters mat-ters presented to the council in a long time Situated on the North Bench above Ninth street is a tract of about 100 acres of land which is owned principally by old time residents res-idents who have been patiently waiting for years for water to reach the land so that they could build homes and take up their abode there When the city auctioned off some of its acres a short time ago a lot of energetic new comers invested about 50 000 in this locality with the understanding that they would have water there in a short time Some months have passed since then and as the owners wore no nearer apparently to obtaining the necessary fluid than before they finally pooled their issue and descended on the council in platoons pla-toons The assessed valuation of the district dis-trict is now only 15000J and the property owners say that the extension of the mains would increase this valuation to at least 000000 while the improvements already planned will within p year after the advent ad-vent of the fluid swell this total to a round million and the district which is now uninhabited un-inhabited and practically uninhabitable will be the home of 150 families One well known business man is waiting to pu up a 10000 building there and all the owners are ready to unite in improving making improvements which revolutionize that section and transform it from a dreary waste into ono of the most beautiful portions por-tions of this beautiful city It is more than likely that the council will grant the prayer A number of councilmen who were seen by a HERALD manyesterday expressed ex-pressed themselves in favor of it and it is likely that ere lone the property owners will be given a chance to scatter their lucre There are several methods by which the water could be easily taken to the district dis-trict One plan is to convey water from City Creek to the natural reservoir located by the expert water commission and pipe it from there to the lots It is claimed that this reservoir could bo led from the surplus sur-plus waters of City Creek Another plan is to extend a main from the Emigration pipe line to the bench and this is the ono that will probably bo adopted A prominent member of the council stated to a HERALI reporter last evening that ho strongly favored this plan The j Emigration pipe line said he is con j structcd to meet just such a contingency asthis It is now completed to Thirteenth East street and the cost of extending a main to this district would bo comparatively compara-tively slight It has the necessary pressure pres-sure and the plan is entirely practicable Then people are entitled to the water and I think they will get it They are all waiting wait-ing to spend their money in building up the city anti it would be poor economy to hold hem back any longer after they have va ted all these years 1 see no reason why the petition should not bo granted at once and then the work could be completed by spring so that they could then go ahead with their improvements Then I believe he contracts for piping the waters of Par eys canon to the city should be let at once and work could be commenced on this as soon as tile first frost is out of the ground This will supply similar wants from the southern and eastern part of the city and with both these improvements completed the demands for water will be met It is not likely that the petition in question ques-tion will bo definitely acted upon at the next meeting of the council but there is little doubt but that the committee will i t1 slt ccummenu bum iu uu LUIILUU uuu tuau whatever plan may bo adopted will bo promptly carried out |
