Show BURNED TO DEATH The Horrible Fate of a Mother and a Daughter EEPETITION OF THE OLD STORY The Mother I Burned Over Twothirds of Her Body Her Daughters Heroic Work The old old story of a slow fire and a coal oil can has again been repeated As a result of the use of kerosene to light a fire two people who were alive and well on Sunday at 3 p m are now buried in the city cemetery and a nusband and father brothers and sisters aro left to mourn their untimely and trigic end A year or more ago James Terry arrived in this city from Scotland leaving his family in the old home until he could make them a now one here By hard work and economy he succeeded in placing himself in a position whereby he would at least be able to offer his loved ones the necessities of life and it was with necessites lfe a glad heart that he announced that fact to his family across the sea As a result of his labors here money was forwarded for-warded and hiswife and six children bid farewell to the old home and journeyed to Salt Lake where they arrived about six or seven weeks ago and were installed in modest but comfortable quarters on Oak street The reunion was of course a happy one and it issafe to say that the future fu-ture before them had never been so brightOn bright-On Sunday afternoon at about 3 oclock Mrs Terry was engaged in preparing dinner din-ner There was some difficulty experienced experi-enced in starting the fire when she renumbered re-numbered hearing somebody say that kerosene was frequently used with good results iu such cases She had had but little experience in the use of the article previous to her arrival here and may be presumed to have been comparatively ignorant of its effects Going Go-ing into another room she secured a gallon can which was nearly full of the fluid and as she was about tc pour some of it in the stove her daughter Agnes aged 13 who was standing near remarked Be careful mother Just at that instant the flames shot up from the stove and caught the oil in the can As a result TnEitn WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION the burning oil was blown all over the room but the person of Mrs Terry seemed to catch most of it In a sscond almost her entire clothing was a mass of flames and she shrieked for help Agnes the littledauphter rushed to her mothers rescue and during her efforts to subdue the flames her own clothing caught fire Hiram Barton who lives near hearing the screams of the unfortunate woman rushed to the rescue and there being no clothing handy he threw Mrs Terry to the ground and rolled her down the hill This had a good effect in subduing the flames but it was too late to be of service for by this time Mrs Terry had been so badly burned that her recovery was looked upon as hopeless The girl Agnes in tho meantime had fought the fire on her own person intelligently intelli-gently and well but it was found she had suffered intensely her lower limbs and the entire lower part of her body being badly burned Dr Richards was called in and advised in order that his patients might receive the bsst of care and attention that they be removed re-moved to the Dewet hospital This was j done and the victims received every attention atten-tion that mortal aid could render but to no avail The sufferings of both were intense and the mother died at about 5 oclock yesterday yes-terday morning th e daughter following about two hours later Dr Pratt who was seen by a Iimt tan representative yesterday said the sufferings suffer-ings of both victims from the time of the accident until their demise was terrible in the extreme Just before the death of the mother she ibccamo delirious and it required twouiea and two women to hold her in bed As to the injuries received the doctor said they were beyond description descrip-tion and it was a sight such as she hoped never again to be called upon to witness TIIC ltJNElAL Owing to the state of the bodies it was deemed advisable to bury them as early as possible so arrangements were made and the funeral services held iu the Seventeenth Seven-teenth ward schoolhouse at 5 oclock last evening |
