Show A GOOD SIGN I In theiSenate on Tuesday Sherman teok his brother Senators by surprise by expressing doabts ai to the constitu tutional right of Congress to legislate for the suppression of trusts and business combinations Congress ha gotten so into the way of legislating upon any subject which any member may bring forward that not one in fifty in either house ever stops to thin that there is anything upon which Con sreis cannot rightfully legislate It is somewhat remarkable that Sherman should have raised the doubt as to the trust matter inasmuch as he has been one of the foremost Senators in assuming power and authority for the Federal government which belongs to the States He and his political associates asso-ciates have from their coming into power been defiantly aggressive in their encroachments upon the rights of the States They have done their utmost ut-most to centralize power and authority both legislative and executive in the Federal government If they had been left undisturbed a little while longer it is doubtful if there would have been any State line remaining for constitutional constitu-tional amendments and Congressional assumption would have obliterated them all and abolished the c pluribus unum It Is a healthy sign when a leading Republican Senator like John Sherman calls in question the right of Congress to legislate on any subject It is suggestive sug-gestive that perhaps there may in time be a return to a regard for the Constitution Consti-tution by Congress If ongress has the right to legislate concerning trusts in the States it is difficult to imagine any subject upon which it cannot make laws for the independent in-dependent commonwealths called States It is high time to call a halt in this assumption of authority and we are glad a Republican has been tie one to make the call |
