Show ANOTHER STRIKE Another big labor strike was inaug t urated in Chicago on Monday when 6000 carpenters quit work They demand de-mand 35 cents an hour and that the working day be eight hours Eleven hundred carpenters in Cincinnati also went out yesterday morning their demands de-mands being for a nine hours day and eight hoars on Saturday and that wages be2SO per day If there ere some wise J men among these strikers they will take account of the money which the men wilt lose by this strike and every week or oftener will show the risures to the foolish fellows If the strikers have any sense if they can be convinced by reason and facts they will soon return to work and stick to their employment until they have obtained something equally or more profitable In one weeks strike these men will lose more than they can recover in a year of steady employment at the increased wages demanded de-manded which it is not at all likely they will get Even if they shall compel com-pel a compliance with their sit s-it will only be temporary for employers will yield only while they arc in a corner and until they can extricate ex-tricate themselves The moment they can do so they will assert themselves against the dictation and then the men will be the peaders It is probable that the strike inaugurated in-augurated by the carpenters will extend to other trades For some time it has been understood that labor organizations organiza-tions were preparing to inaugurate some big strikes this spring and this oie seems to be the beginning It is predicted that the strikers will not be successful however how-ever There has been a long period of industrial stagnation Last year was a year of strikes thousands of workingmen work-ingmen were without employment for weeks and months Today the majority ma-jority of the working classesare in no condition to suffer long lockouts the poverty among them is such that there will be plenty of willing hands to take the places of strikers |
