Show What Whltelnvr Reid Really Meant CINCINNATI April 22lleing interviewed inter-viewed byan Associated Press reporter today Richard Smith denied the truth of the report published in eastern papers that he had received letters trom Whitelaw Reid id which the latter lat-ter said the Tribune had arrived at the conclusion to abandon Elaine for the nomination for the presidency presi-dency and support John Sherman Smith said he received no such letter but admitted that in a conversation with Reid the latter had said he would support Sherman with the greatest pleasure if when the time come he though him the best nominee Smith said further however that when he started to leave Reids office the editor of the Tribune said Hold on now I 1 want to say one thing more I want to tell you I further if we united fully with you and with all your friends in an offer to nominate one of these men you name and a convention should be held within a month the whole lot of us with all the power we could bring to bear conld not prevent the nomination nomina-tion of Blaiue on the first ballot by acclamation ac-clamation |
