Show UBASTUS SNOW The announcement of the death of Apostle Erastus Snow has not come unexpectedly For a long time he was in aujtJrnK but vigorous health and it has been known to many during the past three or four weeks that he was prostrated by whet would in all probability prove to be his last illness I Yet while a considerable portion of the public were not unprepared unpre-pared for his passing away the grief over hi3 tkmise will be general and deep The sorrow will be that of the heart for there were few men who were more closely endeared to the people of this community than he It was not because he was pronvn cut as a leader that he was respected and loved for men occupying consp cu ous rostions are not always held in affectionate af-fectionate esteem by the masses deceased de-ceased was loved and admired by the many because his devotion to and labor for the welfare of the people caused him to be recognized as the peoples friend and champion To be able to pass away as he has done the object of popular admiration and affection af-fection requires a life full of goodness of uprightness of worthy deeds and of integrity Such love as he inspired and held can only be won and retained by a life of rare excellence Erastus Snows career was a remarkable remark-able one not for any features of pecu liar brilliancy with which it was marked nor for any particular deed of greatness by which it was characterized i but for its steady devotion to a purpose its unswerving attachment to principle its neverfailing courage in the came of duty and its evenness and uniformity of progress In early life when he was a mere lad his character scarcely formed and his aim or ambition in life not clearly fixed or defind he was attracted at-tracted by the new issm just then asserting Itself and such investigation GB his youthful mind could give to the matter convincing him that the strange doctrnes wero the teachings of Divinity he accepted and espoused them and from that day tmti his spirit took its flight his life was devoted de-voted to the cause to which he had given himselfthe cause he believed to be that of humanity in its relations to immortality Others may deny that he was right in his estimate of that which he embraced but no one can dispute that he wa sincere and honest in that estimate for ha proved his honesty and sincerity by his every act and utterance during more than I fifty years of active labor iuI I the service he voluntarily accepted Pains and prosecutions deprivations and distress persecutions sufferings nor incessant toil could swerve him i through all he moved unvaryingly forward for-ward never doubting that he was in the right path and ever trying to lead and encourage his fellows to follow and accompany him All men must respect and admire such devotion such integrity integ-rity such courage and such sincerity as ho possessed and displayed Mr Snow was most active and capable capa-ble man in the ministry where he best loved to libor and in that field was he mostly widely known his work reaching over two continents and bringing him immediaely with the people But in the civil and secular walks of life he was as well a leader of men recognized for his ability and trusted for his integrity and for his faithfulness to the people and their rights Like his friend and companion compan-ion Brhham Young he was a pioneer an organizer and colonizer As a legislator legis-lator ho was among the foremost liifl excellent judgment and known wisdom as well as his knowledge of the people and their no ds making him one of the safest men who ever sat in our lawmaking assembly The Mormon community has lost one of its strongest men in the death of Erastus Snow and Utah has been deprived de-prived of one of its foremost wisest and most capable citizens There is real occasion to mourn when such a man dies THE HERALD offers its sympathy to the bereaved family in its deep affliction afflic-tion |
