Show NEW MEXICO Now come some of the newspapers with opposition to the admission to the Union of New Mexico on the ground that the Mormons have control of the Territory It This will be interesting news hereabouts t and equally so in New Mexico where not one in twenty of the people eversaw a Mormon and perhaps per-haps not more than one in five ever heard of a Mormon If there were a hundred Mormons in New Mexico where there is one it would be an argument in favor of the admission of the Territory The propriety of admitting New Mexico may well be called in question not because be-cause there may be a score or more of Mormons over there but because there are not more of such sturdy safe citizens as Mormons in the community The great majority of the people of New Mexico are nut yet Americanized while many of them are no more Americans than are their cousins across the Rio Grande They are ignorant of our institutions and while they are not lawless it is doubted that it would be safe to entrust them with the powers and duties and responsibilities of a republican re-publican government Furthermore the American politicians and not the people would run the State and run it corruptly as they did the Territory a few years ago Besides the politicians and adventurers are the only one desirous of a State government The natives or those of them who are sufficiently enlightened as to be able to consider the matter intelligently do not want a State They realize that it would be a much more expensive government than the present one and that its advantages would be enjoyed by the few and not by the many The people are making progress intellectually intellec-tually and in Americanizing in a few years they will be prepared for accepting accept-ing the enlarged responsibilities and they can then protect themselves from the cunning adventurers and scheming politicians who are ambitious to get the Territory into their hands for other than good purposes |
