Show Bosina Yokes In speaking of this talented actress who begins a threenights engagement at the Theatre on Tuesday evening the San Francisco Chronicle says The greatest stranger within our gates in a dramatic way last evening was Rosina Vokes who appeared at the Bush Street Theatre before a large audience audi-ence but not as large as the quality of the performance deserved The announcement an-nouncement of three pieces always suggests sug-gests light and dainty work and Miss Vokes reputation lies entirely in that line She proved it very completely last night and won a very cordial recognition recog-nition Indeed the programme was I most enjoyable It was a novelty something quite away from the usual run and it was full of clever work wit character acting refined comedy and highglass art Rosin Yokes is the only S oman on the stage who can do a song and dance and not be out of place in a drawingroom She has a bright and remarkable expressive face i her method is perfectly natural she has the manners of a woman of the world and the ease of society and jet she can dance a sword dance in a train dress and do the most graceful of professional steps without suggesting that she is on the stage She I is full of vivacity and yet she Is very effective in repose She is indeed I a comedienne who em Graces all the varieties from Sheridan to burlesque and never loses her refinement Oourtenay Thorpe is a very clever actor In the double part of the husband and the sheriffs officer and the part in the first play hedhowed considerable versatility versa-tility He was a trifle nambypamby in the next piece One of the very best bits of characteracting we have seen lately was the religions Scotch buthr in A Double Lesson The dour characteristics of the Scotch were wonderfully done and in every detail Felix Morris appeared to nave made a complete study of his part Ethel Johnson Isabella Irving Morton Selton and Ferdinand Gottschalk are all well fitted in their parts The company com-pany Is a wellbalanced compact little comedy band of exceptional merit The pieces are In Honor Bound My Milliners Bill and A Double Lesson In the second Miss Vokea sings His Art Was True to Poll admirably and it was encored three times last night Miss Votes vain attempt to show Lady Moncrieff how to act in tragedy comedy and burlesque in the last piece was an extraordinary display of versatility versa-tility The performance is one that will be enjoyed and remember It I leaves a very pleasant recollection |
