Show Government Telegraph Hates Flied WASHINGTON Oct PostmasterGen eral Wanamaker today made public the order fixing the rate for telegraphic service for the government for the present year Day messages not exceeiicjj 10 body words to be sent not exceeding ftC miles lOc andj c extra for each word in esc o of 10 over 400 miles and less than 1000 miles luc for the first 10 words and 4c for each word in excess of 10 over 1000 miles J c a word added to the 1000milc rate Night messages not exceeding 120 words Ific all distances and c for each word iu excess of 20 It is provided that if at any time during the year any telegraph company shall charge the public a less rate than the above government rate it shall be reduced to the same basis These rates do not include in-clude cipher or signal service messages which are fixed at 2jj cents for each word sent over the circuits to be dropped nt designated offices A letter from the postmastergeneral to Dr Green president of thc Western Union company is also made public in course of which Mr Wanamaker says that while he cannot admit Greens claim that the privileges priv-ileges accorded the telegraph company have never been of any value to them he is impressed im-pressed by what Dr Green has advanced m opposition to the application of press rates to government business sad consequently conse-quently revised his order as to rates as adopted He proposes the appointment of a commission of five suitable persons to thoroughly look into the matter and mako recommendations for a scale of rates for the next succeeding fiscal year |
