Show THE REPLY TO STEWART The Commissioner of the General X > autl Office Explains WASHINGTON September GThe Acting Act-ing Secretary of the Interior today sent to Congress all the papers except such as should be withheld for the purposes of justice II called for by the resolution of Senator Stewart asking upon what authority and information the Commissioner of the General Land Office based his assertion that the amendment introduced by the Senator was really in the interest of mining corporations cor-porations and against the settler In one pi these communications the Commissioner says no suits have been recommended in Nevada except against two powerful and wealthy corporations and these have been based not upon informers testimony but the reports of special agents of the department He characterizes as groundless the complaint com-plaint that the special agents act as spies upon the people of Nevada I and says no special agents were in Nevada for several years until they were sent there to investigate the facts incases in-cases where offers of compromise were received from mining companies for the unlawful cutting of timber and endorsed en-dorsed by Senator Stewart He reiterates re-iterates his statement that the proposed pro-posed amendment would be unjust to the settler from the report made by a special agent of the Department to show it is the big smelting works and men who burn charcoal for a living who are engaged m this wholesale timber cutting cut-ting and that the miners proper are bitterly opposed to it |
