Show The Dead Chip Justice TOLEDO Ohio Maroh 29 At 10 oclock the special train bearine the remains re-mains of Chief Justice Waite rolled into the Pennsylvania depot and the funeral party alighted The casket itaining the body was at once removed re-moved to a hearse and th funeral cortege cor-tege proceeded up 81 mmlt Street in the following order Squad of police Toledo To-ledo i ar Association city council mayor and other city officials body with a guard of honor composed of Toledo cadets justices of the Supreme C art in carriages Senatorial and House committees and citizens on foot and in carriages The remains were taken to the residence of Ricnard Waite brother of the deceased to enable Mrs Waite and other membTS of the family to ooiain a private view The city is thronged with strangers and usiness is entirely suspended Flags are floating float-ing at half mat and emblems of mourning are displayed everywhere A tremendous crowd was gathered in the vicinity ot Hon Richard Waites bouse The casket was borne into the house by a squad of Toledo cadets Upon the casKet laid a beautiful wreath irbm the President and Mrs Cleveland and two palms crossed and the room was tilled with beautiful fl rat tributes Alter the casket was placed in the parlor par-lor the pallbearers and others retired The remains were privately viewed by Mrs Waite and others of tbe family Teat there should be no unnecessary display the ceremonies of the day wore as simple as it was possible to make them The casket was carried by a squad of Toledo cadets and they und the pal bearers made up a simple procession to the Guild rooms where the body was to lay in state Theca The-ca bt was placed on a catafalque draped in black in the centre of the large hall and shortly after 1 oclock the lid was removed and shortly afterward the doors were opened to admit the enormous throng of friends and citizens which packed the adjacent street The doors were closed at 2 45 and many thousands wer disa pointed in obtaining obtain-ing a view of the remains The casket was then closed and removed to the chancel of the church which was appropriately ap-propriately decorated THE FUNERAL SKKVICES TOLEDO March 29 Shortly after the body of the Chief Justice was taken into Trinity Church the doors were opened and the distinguished guests entered the churoh in a body and were seated on eithei side of the main aisle The Cervices in the church consisted of the regular funeral services of the Protestant Episcopal Church and were very impressive and the music was rendered by a male choir At the conclusion con-clusion of the regular servic = Rey Dr H B Waldridge former rector of Trinity Church and now of New York Citv delivered a fitting and tender address ad-dress that was very impressive After the services at the church the remains were placed in a hearse and the procession proces-sion was formed which wended its silent way to Forest Cemetery where the casket was dopositd in a vault There wero no ceremonies here save a hort prayer and the closing portion of the Protestant Episcopal ritual The procession then returned to the city Mrs Waite has borne up under the severe strain better than was anticipated an-ticipated by her friends She is supported sup-ported by a deep raigious faith and accepts her loss with Christian resignation resigna-tion I |
