Show POLITICS IN IDAHO 1 The Efforts at a Compromise Have Signally Failed A VERY PRETTY KETTLE OF FISH The Coming Fourth Quite a BlazeThe Quartz Mines No Further Advances Death of Colonel Wood BOISB CITY Juno ISSpecial Correspondence Corre-spondence of THE HCCALDOn Saturday last both the Republican and Democratic central committees of this county held meetings at the capitol building to determine deter-mine what should be done to settle previous previ-ous misunderstandings between the parties par-ties relating to the selection of delegates for tho constitutional convention It is perhaps unnecessary to say that no compromise com-promise was effected The Democrats received re-ceived a communication asking them if they had any proposal to make to which a reply was given in tho negative They then went on to pass resolutions that four of the nine delegates selected at the meeting meet-ing of the county committee some weeks ago should be given certificates as well as as OUC BMBHOENCT DELEGATE To explain what this means we shall be obliged to repeat in substance what we hav before stated in THE HEKALK Last spring soon after the proclamation of Governor Stevenson was issued calling a convention both territorial central committees com-mittees met hero and agreed that the delegates dele-gates should be ohosen without regard to party and should be divided as nearly as i practicable between the parties Under the agreement the Democrats hold that they are entitled to four delegates and the Republicans four while the odd one should be the result of chance They hold the party to be equal in point ot members with Republicans in the countythat the election elec-tion of last fall was no criterion and point to wholesale bribery upon tho one hand and the desertion of James R Hawley by professed friends on account of a factious movement the result of jealousy upon the other as well as slight Republican majorities majori-ties in many cases as evidence of the fact that there has been no political revolution in this county which has usually elected apart a-part of both tickets either being likely to have a majority in nearly all elections anterior an-terior to the last on the other hand the Republicans claim the odd delegate as rightfully their due on account of the majority ma-jority last fall claiming it to be permanent When two parties get themselves fixed in this t each priding itself upon their I party lealty and jealous of their rightsit will be found A VERY DIFFICULT MATTER to effect a compromise Taking this view of tho case we predicted in a former letter that no seUement satisfactory to the wish of both parties could or would be made and the result has justified the prediction Governor Shoup exJudge Kelly the Statesman company and many other Republicans Repub-licans would like to see the thing fixed up but the governor insists on not mixing in local politics while Judge Kelly is above attempting to control primaries and the Statesman company are mostly new comers The young men who have run the machine t insist in having all there is in it and the advice of wiser and older men is regarded scarcely more than the idle wind As matters mat-ters now stand there are but twentysix reliable Democrats in the convention Still the Republicans will not get the test oath through The defection of D P B Pride in that regard is of no small moment He has a following not to be despised It is very likely that he reasons thus If the supreme court of the United States declares the test oath to be unconstitutional unconstitu-tional or if it should be finally abolished I will find many friends among the Mormons No man in my party will exercise so much influence with them as myself They will never forget or forgive Dubois and I will use them as a sledge hammer to beat out his brains What influence ho could exercise ex-ercise in the premises we do not pretend to say and have no knowledge He would probably take the chances on that point TUB COltntO FOUBTII About two weeks ago there was held a large mass meeting in this city to make arrangements for the celebration of the national anniversary It looked as if the Fourth in the prospective would eclipse all precedent An executive committee was appointed of hich Judge Milton Kelly was chairman they appointed subcommittees subcom-mittees all seemed to bo going on smoothly But the kickers got at work One did not want the concourse of people to assemble on kis lots and difficulties began to present themselves at every turn At last the meeting for the relief of the Johnstown and Seattle people was held and 1000 subscribed and then certain cer-tain parties felt as if they had given away all they could afford to At present the celebration is held in abeyance and it is hard to tell what will be done It is pretty certain however that Colonel John Green of the barracks will have his celebration and march his companions into town and make a parade in which he will be joined bi the Governors Guards So we can be quite sure of having a military display in any event The colonel fought in Mexico in several Indian wars in the war of the rebellion and believes in demonstrative patriotism The best of feelings exsist between the officers of the post and the citizens The former are socially inclined and are welcome guests in the drawing rooms of our exclusive class of citizens QUITE A BLAZE A fire occurred on Sunday morning in this city at 930 oclock A barn belonging to Archie Stevenson now in California located lo-cated near the corner of Eighth and Idaho streets was discovered to be in flames The immediate neighborhood was wooden houses but though scorched only the barn and contents and some trees were destroyed de-stroyed Mr Stevenson however had all his household furniture and a buggy which was stored therein destroyed The loss did not exceed 1000 NO rUUTIIER ADVANCES We learn this afternoon that no further advances will be made in the matter of conciliation with the Republicans relative to the Ada delegation Democrats say they are very tired Tim QUARTZ MINES Interest has been very much awakened in tho quartz mines of Boise and Ada counties The old Plowman water mill about twelve miles from here in tho Show Mountain district has been replaced by a steam stamp mill TUB FBUIT CBOP The fruit crop is abundant particularly peaches and trees are already breaking down It is estimated that the surplus from this city and surroundings will this year amount in cash value to over a hundred hun-dred thousand dollars DEATH OF COLONEL WOOD On Sunday evening the sad news reached this city of the death of Colonel Charles A Wood of Lemhi county The deceased has been a prominent figure in the territory terri-tory for the last ten years or more We had occasion to speak of him several times last winter in our correspondence as the probable next governor of Idaho and ho might have been were it not for a succession succes-sion of misfortunes coming one after another an-other tho last of which resulted in his decease During the month of November while sitting in one of tho rooms of his house in Salmon city he observed a strong smell of smoke He ascended the stairway and opening a door from whence it seemed to proceed the flames struck him in the face and ho fell all of tho way down stairs and was taken up burned and bruised This caused an all winters illness Recovering Re-covering somewhat ho was next attacked with inflammatory rheumatism from which he suffered for a long time Aided by a wonderful constitution he again rallied only to bz afflicted with a carbuncle on the back of his neck from the effects of which he passed away after but a few days illness ill-ness Color Wood was born in New Hampshire he served with distinction during the war soon after which ho came to Salmon city embarked in the practice of law and rose to eminence He was a liberal lib-eral Republicannot one of the insane kindand though your correspondent was quite intimate with the gentleman never knew him to broach or force the discussion of politics upon his friends or acquaintances acquaint-ances He had respect for the opinions rights and privileges of other men It is i said that all men have their weaknesses i that No one is perfectno not one but the gallant gentleman of whom we I speak seemed to our mind to as nearly approach that point as any human being with whom we have met In the presence I of the mystery of death all of our differ raltg ffJf1 ences in i worldly thought and action die friends wo and cherish the heart the memory throbs of quick personal while memory reviews each little act of charity fraternity friendship and love He leaves a widow the neice of Governor George L Shoup a lady possessed of many amiable qualities which have endeared her to the hearts of the people of Lemhi county Ho had no children Having procured a leave of absence of two weeks from the secretary secre-tary of the interior Governor Shoup left here on Friday evening to visit his comrade com-rade and relative It is not at all probable he saw him alive The dispatch does not say A BITTER FEELING After the case was decided by the supreme su-preme court in which the action of the legislature in the matter of dividing Al turas county was declared legal tho Hailey people or a part of them at least entertained enter-tained the most embittered feeling against Chief Justice Wier and exhausted all their resources in efforts to procure his removal trumping up the most absurd of charges against him He has recently been holding hold-ing a term of court there lasting about six weeks At first some of the members of the bar affected to treat him with sovereign sov-ereign contempt but he gave them to understand un-derstand that a little of such nonsense would go a great ways and the little man of iron conquered There is not the slightest slight-est probability of his removal The object of the Hailey people was to get one of their home lawyers appointed make up a new case and by that manner of means reverse the former decision of the supreme court The lawyers of the territoryand the word lawyer means a great dealhave the highest high-est respect for the able chief justice Wo think the opinion is unanimous among such that Judge Wier is tho peer of any who have preceded him THE VOTB ON THE CONSTITUTION It is probable that the vote on the new constitutionoutside of the law through it may bewill be accompanied with much excitement and stump speeches will be made by pilgrims from the larger towns in all mining camps and school districts The merits of the proposed state of political being will be so discussed that the people who care to know something of its merits and possess intelligence will have some knowledge of its benefits and disadvantages disadvan-tages Buz |
