Show THIS MOMDHGSEfflE Eph Knowltons Livery Stable Earned to Ashes SEVENTEEN HORSES PERISH A Han Dadly Burned While Saving the Stock Two Incipient Blazes Discovered Jast In Time At about 105 this morning flames were discovered issuing from the building known as the old City Market situated immediately opposite THE HERALD office and which has been used by Eph Knowl ton for some time past as a livery stable Tho immense structure was wholly of wood and it was not long ere it was entirely wrapped in flames the hay piled in the loft aiding the progress of the liames materially The heat from tho burning mass was so intense in-tense as to scorch a fence several rods awavandat first it was feared that several of the adjoining buildings would be licked in Even tho waifs of THE HERALD building several rods away became so warm as to prevent them being touched by i tho hand and the compositors were driven away from the windows Tho arrival of the firemen and tho turning on of a couple of however streams from that tho the new flames steamer would soon bo confined showed to the ono building i and within n very few I minutes i the fire was entirely i under control As a precautionary measure however the other steamer was called out and stationed near a tr plug to which it could have been attached and hose run in any direction at a moments notice However the services ser-vices of the Pioneer were not needed nOW IT STARTED There was such an extraordinary excitement ex-citement among those connected with the stable that it was impossible to obtain any information as to how or where the fire originated From what could bo gathered however it roust bo taken for granted that the blaze first commenced near the rear or eastern end of the building and under nooth the hay loft Just how many horses were in the stable report varies placing the number at from twentyfive to thirty It was probably prob-ably near the latter figure Most of these were owned by Knownton but some of them wero boarders Of these only eight were saved There were also several buggies belonging to boarders all of which went up in flames Peter Anderson and others wlio were camping in the yard lost their bedding part of ther harness and wagon but succeeded in saving their horses I A STAN BADLY BURNED Jim Morris an employee at the stable I received some severe injuries during his efforts to extricate the frightened horses whose screams and struggles to get away i from the death that awaited them were pitiful in the extreme Morris managed to i get over as far as the Continental from which point a doctor was summoned An examination of his injuries made by a HERALD representative at 230 this morning revealed the fact that he was badly scorched on the rear of the bead although the hair had not been burned off his back was badly blistered his right foot burned considerably and his left foot slightly injured He was suffering considerable con-siderable pain at the time andcould give no ntelligent account of the occurrence further than that ho was in the office presumably in bed when the fire broke out He rocked himself to and f from the chair and his actions showed how much he was suffering The injuries will probably confine con-fine him to the house for a month or more TWO MORE FIRES DISCOVERED As a result of the flying sparks which tvcrohurled in all directions a couple of small blazes wero discovered during the progress of the fire One was in the rear of the bus house of Grant Brothers in Sells lumber yard and close to a stack of hay When first seen it had grown to such proportions as to necessitate the use of a hose to extinguish it The other was in the same locality but did not threaten such serious results THE BUILDING was owned by Mrs J E Caine and Mrs D C Dunbar It was totally uninsured THE LOSS could not be arrived at this morning but will probably bo fixed later in the day |
