Show I BLABES FOREIGN POLICY Claus Spreckels Expresses Himself on It and the Annexation of the Sandwich Islands Special to TnE IrRALD ttamner Dispatch PHILADELPHIA Nov 16Claus Spreckels talked today about the prevalent idea that Secretary Blame intends to spring a defi nite pole with regard to the expansion of American influence and territory I is true he said that a bold original and definite policy and one appealing strongly to the imagination and sentiment and so curmgrcsults of permanent value is what the country has expected of Blaine I I was heiehtened by tho Samoan incident I 1 cannot say anything about other places but it is my opinion there swill be no annexation I annexa-tion of the Haw Mian islands I donot believe ic intends to annex any territory but if this country wants the Sandwich ismnds it is not within the power of any other country to wrest them from us The idea is to have a reciprocity treaty on imports and exports with the exception of liquors This being the case it makes me think Mr Blame never entertained any idea of annexing annex-ing the islands We have a coaling station at Honolulu and at Pearl river w o have ono of the finest harbors m the world should war break out w o will want such a harbor and it would never do to let the Hawaiian islands go into the pow er of any other country Mj idea is that Mi Blames idea to take care of the interests of our citizens at home and abroad and not reach out for other territory at least not the Sandwich islands |
