Show THE RIOTOUS MINERS t A Serious Disturbance at Scranton Par I r ATTACKING THE BASKACKS The Strike at AYeehankeu The Tri ennate Tennessee Democrats Connecticut Kepubllrans The Striking Miners SCRANTON Pa January 13Tbe discontent dis-content among the striking miners formerly in the employ of the Hillsdale Coal Company at the Consolidated Colliery Col-liery near Moosic manifested itself Wednesday morning when the working miners or blacklegs were assaulted by the strikers as the former were returning re-turning from work to the barracks whey they eat and sleep The outbreak WAS SO THREATENING that the working miners who were guarded by a meagre posse of seven men fared for their safety and imp im-p n1 ed the companys officials for adriiioral protection Today in re spoie to the request of the workin miners Snperintendent stay of the HiHsdale Coal Company employed George Kell of the coal and iron police of this city to go to Moosic and take I cbarge of a posse A WARRANT WAS ISSUED and taken along for the arrest of Jan e i Ward the ringleader of the dsturb ances When May and the officers arrived they were met by a howling mob of 500 who began throwing stones at them just then the blacKlegs blacK-legs appeared and were chased into their barracks Ward was finally arrested and the mob rushed to the justices office defying the officers to bring him there Their weight sagged the floor and fearing the building would fall they rushed out when the prisoner was hurried in by the police The mob then ATTACKED THE BARRACKS and riddled the windows with stones The guards seized their rifled and the black legs rushed for formidable looking revolvers determined to hold the fort The assault on the barracks bar-racks being continued the order was given 10 fire Twenty balls sped in their direction and the crowd turned and fled It cannot now be learned whether any of the strikers were shot or not Mine Foreman Dolphin gives it as his opinion that several strikers were wounded atleast by the volleyfronl the posses rifles and the strikers were assisted and encouraged by the residents resi-dents of Moosic All was quiet atmid y night Fresh trouble is anticipated tomorrow to-morrow |
