Show THE DOCTORS DO AGREE The Establishment an Examining Examin-ing Board Necessity The communication forwarded to the City Council by tne Salt Lake Medical Society and published in THE HEBUJ > of Wednesday aroused considerable comment in medical circles Several MDs of both schools not members of the society who were seen yesterday stated that they were in hearty accord with the views expressed by the committee com-mittee acting for the Medical Society and would c3operate heartily in any movement looking to the elevation of the legitimate profession and the oblit eration of the quacks infesting the city and Territory All agreed too that the mere exaction of the license fee did not tend to the elevation of the profession pro-fession or the protection of the pUblic from the sharpens who are ever ready to prey upon the ever susceptible putlio They urged further that the present law whicti imposes upon the Mayor the duty of passing upon the competency of applicants is not a good one The law does not pro erly define to whom he shall issue licenses but merely says all applicants for a physicians surgeons dentists occuhsts or aurists license shall present pre-sent a diploma or otter evidence of competency The evidence of competency petency said one of the physicians sam yesterday is left entirely to the discretion of the Mayor providing the applicant has no diploma and even if he present a diploma it can scarcely be expected that the Mayor or anyone for that matter outside of the profession has a full knowledge as to whether it is genuine or notwhether it is a prize gained by hard study and faithful work or one that has been purchased as thousands have been from some bogus medical college lor 5 or less This is all wrong and I do not wonder that the gentleman gentle-man at the head or the muncipality I called a halt and ask for some instructions instruc-tions from the Council as to his duties I in tho matter There is no one 1 believe be-lieve but who will concede that the I appointment of an examining board is an absolute necessity and has been II for years The demand for such an organization increases daily By actual count not less than ten new signs bearing the word Dr j have been flung to the breeze during i 190t sL J the last six weeks Who some e f ar those are where they came from and whether they are competent to practice I prac-tice medicine are questions unanswered Were an examining board such as the doctors suggest in existence composed com-posed of physicians of both schools known to the public there would be some guarantee that lives would not be unneccessarily endangered if entrusted en-trusted to the newcomers Ihe City Council will doubtless take some action ac-tion in the matter at an early date |
