off and a beautiful beauti-ful heat followed Diamond went to the lead and kept it halfway half-way round Then Velox slowly and steadily began to gain then he went off his feet on a run for so long that his adherents groaned inspirit on the home stretch he and Diamond came down the course nose and nose together to-gether and yells of a dead heat had already risen when Velox lunged forward and came under the wire only half ahead in advance Many thought the heat would not be given to Velox on account of the long run in which he had indulged but the judges took a different view and amid applause announced an-nounced Velox first Diamond second Lister third Time 230 THIRD HEATVelox now sold lively at 40 against the field at 15 80 against 25 70 against 20 and so on ad infinitum In the around so fast that it was impossible to keep track of them all three horses selling first second and third choice alternately alter-nately An average would show that the bets on all three were nearly even The race was the most exciting of the day The horses got off at the first start and I tore past the spectators in a bunch Policy slightly leading This was maintained until the three were jut entering upon the last quarter of a mile of a sudden Susie S who was closely following Policy was observed to go down and a cloud of dust at once shutout shut-out the vision of her self and her rider A yell of warning to the rider of Lila who was close behind went up from the crowd but it was to late In a second Lila had tumbled over Susie Sand S-and a shout of horror was given vent to as the two horses and their riders I rolled an indistinguishable cloud of dust upon the course Instantly the crowd broke from its place and surged over the field in the direction of the fall and all the efforts of the deputies could not keep them back No one expected to find the boys alive and it was consequently with feelings of relief that the spectat tors saw Anderson the rider of Lila come limping out of the cloud of dust his arm however was broken at the wrist Taylor rider of Susie had no external injuries but he was so badly hurt internally that he had to be carried away by four men to a carriage in no instance sold lower than 9 and at times brought 12The The 240 pacing proved to be the favorite race so far as the pool box was concerned In tbis Ella S sold favorite favor-ite at 25 and Travis second choice for generally although the same figure I he brought 26 tune I for at second one choice against Ellas 2o for first BadgerBusby and Blackbird were old as the field and were eagerly tkeu
