Show 7 AMOSEilENTS TUB PHILUABKOKIO CoNorET The Philharmonic society made its initial bow last evenIng b fore a large brilliant and critical audience which though inclined to be somewhat cold at the Btartwarmed up effusir as ihe concert con-cert progressed Tolovarsofjnosc liB evening waa a charming one though it may have been a trifle heavy for the popular taste Tnejprogramme sparkled with gems first among which must be named the selections by the new basso Mr Blake who WaS as much of a surprise to the houo and woo caught it as thunderously thunder-ously as if he had been our old friend Iiakesbmijelf With a voice which has the compass aud quality above of a pure baritone and beloyr of a thorough sonoious bass Mr Blake is almost n phenomenon among vocalists Ho sings with great taste and in exact tune Mr We he as he always must when he is en the programme came inlor a heavy I amount of attention and was enthusiastically enthusi-astically recalled Mr Kent did some exquHte work throughout the pro gramme and his solo was also encored MrGorlinski Kuckena 0 Weep Not batter ti au we have heard nmi do anything of lute years and was forced to reappear Mrs Druce PUg ley was immenssly applauded for her rendering of the dltlicut Frelschuiz prayer and being recalled gave one of her best selections in a htyle full of teadeiness She Wandered Down the Mountain Side The piano solo by Miss Anderson with orchestral accompaniment ac-companiment was moat delicately and artniically done and was also loudly applauded The adveat of the whole society in chorus was the event over which probably the natest interest est was felt They rendered three selections thft chief of which was easily the ol srg Traviata finale which wold have gamed an encore but for the lateness of the hour The ble iding of tho voices in toe concerted part the chorus and theorcbetra made a great effect Iu the first selection from Naaman the orchtfctra was too htavy for the voices particularly for the trebles tenors and altos which need adding to for a hill like the Theatre the bass stood < ut finely We think Professor Krouse who worked like a Trojan all night is principally to be congratulated upon his orchestra The body of men he had under him worked tojzo her as evenly as if they had never worked apart and the shading the blending the even balance ot the part the brilliance and the delicacy particularly in the bpauish I walz the accompaniment accompani-ment to Miss Andersons Romance and the Introduction and Finale of te Traviata selections wore uch as have rarely if ever been excelled by any body of musicians of the same number heard in this city Mr Mcintyre did some good work as accompanist There vere flowers galore though it appeared to take some nrehty generalship to get them delivered |
