Show Navy of the United States WASHINGTON Nov 21 Theodore Wil son chief of the bureau of construction and repairs has submitted to Secretary Tracy a voluminous report of the operations conducted under tho suparvision of the bureau during the year ended June 30 list all estimates for the coming fiscal year ending June 301S91 The commodore presents a lengthy argu ment in favor of increasing the efficiency of the navy yards as indicated in the estimates esti-mates saying this great nation should not close any navy yards The report says that after eight or nino years there will be no wooden vessels remaining re-maining in active service A deficiency ap jropriation will be necessary in order that the work of construction and repair maybe carried on during the remainder of the present fiscal year without interruption The single turreted monitors are said toe > to-e now in a worse than useless state and tLe report racommeuds that something be dono with them to put them into condi iou for efficient service harbor and coast ton efcent 1efense will cost it is estimated 150000 i There arc thirteen of these monitors 1 ret i With I the completion of the vessels now building and appropriated for the United I States will possess ten armored vessels thirteen single turreted monitor twenty one steel cruisers or gunboats two dynamite dyna-mite cruisers a pi a tice cruiser for cadets naarmored ram one first class torpedo boat ana seven iron steamers The work of rebuild n the navy is progressing pro-gressing very satisfactorily and the results accomplished during the past six months are auidcicnt guarantee of the purpose of tile department to advance the work with the utmost rapidity and of its energy and success in time performance of the task I Vessels already under contract and building I build-ing at the navy yards are progressing favorably 1 fa-vorably and some are rapidly nearing completion II I I pletion The progress made upon the armed cruiser Maine at the navy yard in New York deserves special mention and is very creditable to that yard It will thus be seen that so far as lies within its power the department is vigorously endeavoring to satisfy tho popular demand for establishing estab-lishing a navy worthy of tho United States and commensurate with Us importance a a maritime power |
