Show t MORE STRIKERS I The New York Freight Handlers Kicking INCREASED WAGES DEMANDED We Cannot Recognize the Propriety Paylnir All Alike WMiout Ue iBard toExperlencnor Efficiency THE FREIGHT HANDLERS Are Involved in the Longshoremens Strike NEW YORK January 31The strike took nejv phase today It not only involves the additional longshoremen I who went out this morning but also the freighthandlers of tne railway thus tightening the blockade on transportation transporta-tion and adding another thousand to the thousands already idle i Anparently by preconcerted action committees of freight handlers of a number of the roads today PRESENTED FORMULATED DEMANDS on the managements and it is understood under-stood that similar demands will be made on the managers of the railroads leading into this city The freight handlers of the Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania Railway comnarfv employed on the companys North Riyer piers today to-day notified the managers that unless the rae of wages was increased from 17 to 20 cents per hour a general strike would follow all along the companys docks The company was given until tomorrow nocn to consider the demand de-mand There are about 2000 men employed em-ployed on the piers DEMANDS WERE ALSO MADE by the freight handlers employed by the Central Railroad New Jersey Central Cen-tral and by the New York Lake Erie h Western for increased wages and THREATENING TO IMMEDIATELY QUIT WORK if their demands arenot complied with Concessions asked for were refused absolutely At the office of the new Jersey Central it was ascertained that a committee of five waited upon ihe revivers re-vivers this morning and presented a demand for increased wages for freight I handlers and other employees and insisted sisted on an answer before 3 oclock this afternoon The receivers met them again at that hour to give them a written reply in which they declined to comely wih the demand I de-mand The committee took their departure de-parture and immediately afterwards the freighthandlers of the company on pier No 14 went out on strike Among the demands of the committee was that the coal strike as far as the Central Railway of New Jersey is concerned con-cerned be settled in twentyfour hours after presenting this petition In the course of its reply the company com-pany says We expect to give equal pay to clerks and others who are employed ployed in similar positions provided hey are equally qualified to fill these posItIons but WE CANNOT RECOGNIZE TIlE PROPRIETY OF PAYING ALL ALIKE without regard to experience or efficiency You state that yon I will not handle any freight that has been previously hand led by nonunion men As receivers of a company that is a common carrier it is your duty to handle any freight presented to us whether the same has been previously handled by nonunion men or otherwise WE SHALL DO OUR UTMOST TO PERFORM TIllS DUTY I You demand that the coal strike be qttled as far as our railroad is concerned cerned in twentyfour hours This strike does not exist among our employees loyees and it is for others not for us to settle Several more ocean steamships arrived rived tonight Union men are working work-ing better and lucre is not so much freight pushed tip aVon 8atnrday In Brooklyn the strikers are quiet and orderly deny Freight is being moved slowly by Italians and nonunion men There is much eniarrassment to business |
