Show THEY DONT LIKE IT Canadians Kicking Over the InterState Commerce ITS EFFECT ACROSS THE LINE Citizens of the Dominion Slaking Their Purchase la Other Mar ketsA Miserable Failure That Blarsted Bill WASHINGTON May 16The Department Depart-ment of State has received andtrans mitted to the InterState Commerce Commission for its information a letter from United States Consul Twitchell at Kingston Canada upon the subject of the interstate commerce law and ita effects upon our trade with Canada The consul says Canadas high protective pro-tective tariff in which there is no prospect pros-pect of reduction has made me apprehensive appre-hensive from the first of the effect of the increased railroad rates on imports from the United States to this section of Canada Since the 4th of April these rates are shown by freight bills here paid to have been increased from 25 to 100 per cent with the change on Canadian roads After waiting several days for its effects I have made a partial par-tial canvass of the importers of the City of Kingston with the following result Coal dealers are preparing to bring from Nova Scotia coal for all purposes where Nova Scotia coal can be used Two factories which hare always used AmericAn coal have put in their orders for Nova Scotia coal In hardware and pressed tinware I find orders have been changed from American to Canadian Cana-dian houses on account of freight In groceries there is the some complaint The product of the countries outside out-side of the United States it now expected to go by way of British Columbia and HalifaX An unpleasant feature in connection with my canvass has been the general expression to find how and where they may make purchases pur-chases without coming in contact with American railroads with the general notion of reaching out for trade It seems to me unnecessary to prophesy what will be the effect upon the American Ameri-can manufacturers wholesale dealers and railroads by these general inquiries in-quiries J |
